Job description
About the company
Hills Accounting provides a broad range of tax and management accounting support to clients across many entity types and industries. The firm focuses on tailored, client-first service and aims to deliver strong outcomes for every engagement. Its client base includes straightforward tax clients as well as small businesses, SMSFs, trusts, companies, landlords, and investors, so the work offers real variety from week to week. The practice uses Xero, XPM, and BGL SF360.
Role overview
This Hobart-based position is for a friendly, highly organised Receptionist/Bookkeeper who can work on-site in either a full-time or part-time capacity. The role is the first point of contact for the practice and involves keeping the office running smoothly, supporting accountants, and handling administrative tasks efficiently. It also includes bookkeeping support and preparing work so accountants can complete final review and finalisation.
Key responsibilities
The successful person will manage reception duties, maintain office order, provide customer service, and assist the accounting team with day-to-day administration. They will also help with bookkeeping tasks and prepare documents and records for accountant review. Experience with compliance work such as income tax returns, FBT returns, activity statements, and lodging these documents is highly desirable.
What you need to bring
The ideal candidate will already have several years of experience in a public accounting environment and a solid understanding of bookkeeping and accounting processes. Strong communication, a professional and cheerful manner, and the ability to explain matters clearly to clients are important. The role also calls for excellent organisation, sound time management, confidence with office systems and equipment, and the ability to handle competing priorities without close supervision.
Qualifications and technical experience
Applicants should be comfortable working with office software and accounting systems such as Xero, MYOB, Microsoft Office, and Excel. Experience in reception, correspondence, scheduling, filing, phone handling, and supervising office operations will be valuable. A diploma or similar qualification in Accounting, Business, Administration, or a related area is preferred.
Preferred experience
To stand out, you should have bookkeeping qualifications or a Diploma of Accounting, recent experience in an Australian accounting practice, and a proven ability to manage your workload independently. A negotiating approach and the confidence to communicate with the ATO and clients are also useful for this role.
Start date
The role can begin immediately or by mutual arrangement.
What is offered
Salary is negotiable and will depend on experience and skills. The firm also offers a pathway into accounting for the right person, a positive work culture, direct access to the owners, and a team environment where you will be treated as a valued member.
