Job description
About the Role
Applied Materials, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing technology, is seeking a skilled Robotic Engineer for its Bengaluru, India location. This role is integral to the design, development, integration, and qualification of sophisticated automation and robotics subsystems crucial for semiconductor equipment. The position demands a high level of technical expertise in robotics, mechanism design, and system integration, coupled with the ability to independently tackle complex challenges and make informed engineering decisions.
As a key technical resource, you will oversee subsystems from conception through validation, collaborating with mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and supplier teams to ensure robust engineering outcomes. This senior position also involves mentoring junior engineers, contributing to project leadership, and fostering cross-functional alignment.
Responsibilities
- Spearhead the design and development of intricate automation and robotics subsystems, managing engineering projects that require seamless integration across mechanical, electrical, controls, and software domains.
- Act as the primary design authority for designated sub-modules, defining hardware and software specifications, detailed designs, and operational parameters to guarantee subsystem compatibility and optimal performance.
- Execute detailed designs for components and assemblies, including material handling robots, transfer mechanisms, substrate storage modules, and associated electrical/control systems.
- Perform in-depth engineering analyses of robotic and automation subsystems using advanced techniques like kinematics, dynamics, and mechanism design to resolve intricate technical issues.
- Construct, evaluate, and qualify prototypes of new designs, or collaborate with external suppliers to procure subsystems and verify adherence to detailed specifications and performance benchmarks.
- Develop and execute comprehensive testing plans according to internal standards and industry reliability requirements, implementing design or operational adjustments based on test results.
- Identify, diagnose, and resolve complex engineering challenges related to operability, reliability, serviceability, manufacturability, and system integration.
- Ensure interface alignment across various automation modules and related subsystems, such as robotics, loadlocks, process chambers, and controls, to facilitate successful system assembly and final testing.
- Independently manage assigned subsystem or module-level workstreams, applying sound engineering judgment informed by design analysis, test data, field feedback, manufacturing considerations, and cross-functional input.
- Provide technical guidance, coaching, and support to less experienced engineers in areas of design practices, analytical methods, and problem-solving.
- Lead or contribute to smaller cross-functional projects, ensuring alignment among engineering, manufacturing, sourcing, quality, and supplier partners.
- Offer remote technical assistance to field teams and internal stakeholders, clearly explaining complex technical issues and recommending appropriate actions.
- Contribute to the Product Development Process by actively participating in design reviews, making critical technical decisions, ensuring documentation quality, and supporting readiness for production release.
Requirements
- A Master's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
- Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Solid understanding of tolerance stack-up analysis.
- Hands-on experience with CAD software packages.
- Strong analytical and engineering problem-solving capabilities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to develop specifications and articulate complex technical issues.
- Proficient troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, controls, and integration contexts.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously while effectively collaborating with diverse teams.
- Capacity to influence stakeholders and build technical consensus across different interfaces.
- Aptitude for acting as a technical resource, coach, and mentor to junior engineers.
- Ability to manage defined workstreams or small projects with sound engineering judgment.
- Keen attention to detail and the ability to assess production readiness and subsystem compliance.
- High level of computer literacy and practical experience with engineering tools.
Perks
While specific perks are not detailed, this role offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology in the semiconductor industry, contribute to significant engineering projects, and grow professionally within a leading global company.
Eligibility
This role is open to candidates with a strong background in Mechanical Engineering, possessing the required educational qualifications and technical skills. The ideal candidate is a senior professional comfortable with complex problem-solving, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and operating with a high degree of independence.
