Job description

Role overview

The School Premises Manager is responsible for supporting the needs of the project and overseeing the day-to-day upkeep of the school site. This includes planned preventative maintenance tasks and working alongside other premises staff as part of a team to help deliver services across the school.

Key duties

  • Unlock and secure the school each day, making sure the buildings and grounds remain safe and protected.
  • Set and shut down alarms, and ensure all doors, windows, and gates are locked at the end of the day.
  • Inspect heating, lighting, and hot water systems to confirm they are working properly.
  • Handle minor maintenance work, make hazards safe, and escalate urgent defects without delay.
  • Work with on-site contractors and keep an eye on the standard of cleaning across the site.
  • Look after outdoor spaces, remove litter, empty bins, and keep walkways safe during bad weather.
  • Carry out general portering tasks such as moving furniture and receiving deliveries.
  • Complete basic health and safety checks and keep the related records up to date, including fire systems, emergency lighting, and water systems.
  • Provide support for lettings, emergencies, and cover at other schools when needed, including contractor inductions and training assistance.

Candidate profile

The ideal candidate will bring experience in site security, building inspections, and basic maintenance work. You should be comfortable coordinating with contractors, checking cleaning quality, and handling health and safety routines, including fire and emergency checks. A flexible, proactive approach is important, along with the ability to step in when cover is needed and help with team training.
