Job description

Role overview

The Shift Lead supports daily store operations and steps into leadership duties when management is unavailable. This includes opening and closing the store, keeping the front end and stockroom prepared for business, and helping ensure customers receive a consistent, high-quality experience.

Key responsibilities

In this position, you will manage a range of operational and customer-facing tasks, including cash handling, order support, inventory accuracy, signage, and store presentation. You will also help coordinate team activities, communicate priorities when management is off-site, and handle escalations or customer concerns as needed.

Store opening and cash handling

  • Unlock and secure the store when managers are not present, including starting required systems and preparing the sales floor and stockroom for the day.
  • Handle opening procedures for the back door to receive deliveries.
  • Process product returns, cancelled orders, customer refunds, cash drops into the safe, and provide change for registers when requested.
  • Support bookkeeping tasks such as cash reports, cash counts, ledgers, and bill payments when required.

Customer service

  • Welcome customers and patients, offer help with products and services, and resolve questions or issues to create a positive experience.
  • Demonstrate customer service behaviors that encourage courtesy, proactive help, and attentive service until the customer is satisfied.

Operations and merchandising

  • Work with the warehouse and vendor ordering process, including reviewing and receiving orders and helping with backdoor delivery access.
  • Ring up sales accurately, including handling scanning mistakes, price checks, out-of-stock items, price overrides, and void transactions.
  • Support the review of order exceptions on release day and assist with reverse logistics such as returns, damaged items, and empty package handling.
  • Help evaluate and build product displays, including promotional, seasonal, structural, and sale displays, and complete resets and revisions.
  • Maintain accurate inventory counts across departments, stockroom, and overstock areas.
  • Help enforce the outdate program and stock rotation practices, including first-in-first-out handling for consumable goods.
  • Set and update basic department pricing, post required signage, and complete any pricing-related compliance tasks within required deadlines.
  • Assist with food separation and proper shelf placement according to company policy.
  • Maintain familiarity with store systems and equipment.
  • Assist at the pharmacy window when needed.
  • Ensure compliance with state and local rules for regulated products such as alcohol and tobacco.
  • Perform bag checks for team members before they leave the store.
  • Keep the store clean, orderly, and well maintained, and report repair needs when management is unavailable.
  • Carry out special projects and additional duties as assigned.

Leadership and communication

  • Act as the link between management and team members by communicating assigned tasks when leadership is not on site.
  • Report customer complaints and disciplinary issues to management.
  • Coach team members on service standards and operational processes where needed.

Training and development

  • Attend required training and complete assigned learning modules and personal development tasks.

Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of experience in leadership, supervision, or a retail key-holder role.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently, except where local requirements differ.
  • Preferred: knowledge of store inventory control.
  • Preferred: valid PTCB certification or pharmacy license, if required by the state, and willingness to maintain it.
  • Applicants with arrest or conviction records will be considered, where permitted.
