Job description
Role overview
This is a permanent, full-time Social Worker position at the Wellington site, supporting the Wellington central area. The annual pay for the role is between $81,206.00 and $97,557.00, with the final amount determined by experience.
About the work
Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is focused on putting tamariki and rangatahi at the centre of everything it does. The team works with a whānau-led approach, aiming to support families in mana-enhancing, collaborative ways that improve safety and wellbeing for children and young people.
Wellington offers a compact, coastal city environment with strong public transport, a lively café scene, and a mix of government and corporate opportunities. The site is part of a connected inner-city community working to support tamariki, mokopuna, and whānau in a growing and innovative region.
What the role involves
This opportunity suits both early-career social workers and experienced professionals seeking a change. The position calls for someone who can help drive positive outcomes for children and families, work closely with whānau, and coordinate with other social services to provide joined-up support.
You will be part of a team that is committed to helping children and young people feel safe, build strength, and thrive. The role involves community engagement and contributing to sustainable support systems that place tamariki safety and wellbeing first.
What you need to bring
To be considered, you should be a qualified and registered social worker with the right mix of professional capability, cultural understanding, and personal resilience. Strong communication, sound organisation, and solid computer skills are also important for success in this role.
Benefits and working environment
The team works alongside police and community agencies and provides substantial training and professional development. The workplace is diverse, inclusive, and respectful, with a supportive environment designed to help staff grow.
Additional benefits include a central location near many eateries and shops, plus the chance to expand your professional network across the wider children's workforce.
About the organisation
Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is committed to ensuring New Zealand is the best place in the world for children. The organisation also works in partnership with hapū, iwi, and Māori organisations to help identify appropriate responses for children in need. Its values emphasise putting tamariki first, acting with aroha, respecting mana, being tika and pono, valuing whakapapa, and recognising that oranga is a journey.
How to apply
Applications should be submitted online with a CV and covering letter. Existing employees should apply using their Oranga Tamariki email login. Applications close on Friday 10 July 2026, although applications may be reviewed and interviews held as suitable candidates are identified. The organisation may close the advert earlier if the vacancy is filled.
Code of conduct and workplace expectations
Applicants should be familiar with the organisation’s code of conduct, which outlines expectations for kaimahi. It requires staff to attend work free from the influence of drugs and alcohol.
