Job description
About the company
Stage 3 Separation builds solids control systems for mud applications that help operators manage solids efficiently, cut costs, and support low-discharge or zero-discharge outcomes where needed. The company also relies on field technicians, supervisors, engineers, and scientists to provide practical guidance that improves job performance, efficiency, and overall cost control.
The business is guided by a core set of values centered on safety, collaboration, innovation in technology, and strong operational standards.
Role overview
Reporting to the Field Leader(s), the Solids Control Field Technician supports mechanical operations tied to drilling activities and the recycling of drilling fluid in closed-loop and related mud systems. This role includes structured on-the-job training on Stage 3 equipment and involves 12-hour shifts on a 14-days-on/7-days-off rotation at project-based remote work sites. This is a safety-sensitive position.
The role is based out of the Calgary office, while field assignments may take place across remote locations throughout Canada.
Key duties
The technician will learn to assemble and disassemble equipment, run a range of solids control systems, support fluid handling and treatment tasks, and assist with maintenance, reporting, and safety practices. The position also includes working with heavy equipment under supervision and maintaining a tidy and compliant worksite.
Work schedule and travel
This position requires availability for a 14-on/7-off rotation, though schedules may differ depending on the site. Shifts are 12 hours long, including swing shifts from 12:00 PM to 12:00 AM or 12:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The technician must be willing to travel within Canada to remote locations and may be assigned to one or multiple projects.
Safety and operational expectations
The role requires strict adherence to safety procedures, participation in daily safety meetings, correct use of PPE, and completion of PJRA/JSA documents, inspection records, observation logs, and checklists as needed. The employee must also maintain clean shared living quarters and be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including cold, wet, and hot environments.
Training and growth
Training will cover rigging up and rigging down equipment, operating shaker tanks, centrifuges, drying systems, and pumps, understanding basic environmental services and electrical concepts, analyzing drilling fluids, and learning service tasks such as air drilling, barite recovery, de-watering, floc water, fluid transfers, low-gravity solids management, and cuttings drying/invert recovery. The trainee is expected to progress to Field Level 1 after successfully completing performance evaluations and competency tests.
Required background
Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED and be 18 years of age or older. A two-year associate’s degree or technical diploma in technology, electronics, mechanics, or a related field is preferred. The job also calls for a valid provincial driver’s license, valid insurance, and a clean driving record. A Class 5 license in Alberta, British Columbia, or Saskatchewan, or Class G in Ontario, or an equivalent license in another province or territory, is required. Basic Microsoft Office skills, including Outlook, are also needed.
Preferred experience
Prior solids control experience is an asset, along with at least 1 year of dewatering or water-based mud/transfer experience. Experience operating shaker tanks, centrifuges, drying equipment, pumps, or heavy equipment such as forklifts, excavators, or wheel loaders is also preferred. Familiarity with drilling fluid properties and any related safety certifications will be considered an advantage.
Health, testing, and certification notes
This is a safety-sensitive role and may require pre-employment drug and alcohol screening through urine and/or breath testing. Certifications such as WHMIS, H2S, CPR/First Aid, and Lockout/Tagout may be provided or earned through the role. Certification training for equipment operation will be completed before site deployment.
Benefits
The company offers employer-paid employee health insurance, dependent health coverage, life insurance, paid vacation, and paid holidays. Additional available benefits include dental and vision coverage, extra life and dependent life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, and an RRSP/DPSP retirement plan with company matching.
