Job description

Role overview

This FBI special agent position is open because it has been exempted from the federal civilian hiring freeze. The role is centered on using your analytical background to support national security and public safety work. In this career path, you will apply your experience in accounting and finance to investigate violent crime, fraud, cyber threats, terrorism, and other evolving risks. The job calls for strong attention to detail, pattern recognition, data analysis, and the ability to work through complex information to uncover meaningful leads.

The special agent track is intended to help professionals move from a specialized field into federal law enforcement. The work is varied, demanding, and fast-moving, with an emphasis on adaptability, resilience, and sound judgment. The Bureau also highlights professional development, competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and a supportive environment designed to help agents maintain balance while growing their impact.

How your background fits

Candidates with accounting and finance experience bring a foundation in financial analysis, budgeting, risk evaluation, and interpretation of complex data. Familiarity with R, Tableau, and financial accounting is specifically relevant, along with the focus and flexibility needed to make decisions under pressure. In this role, the ability to connect patterns and turn information into investigative insight is a core advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate possible breaches of federal law, along with cybersecurity and public-safety matters.
  • Use judgment, initiative, and flexibility to respond to changing investigative needs.
  • Build and sustain working relationships with law enforcement partners at the federal, state, local, tribal, territorial, and international levels.
  • Keep the physical readiness needed to carry out law-enforcement duties effectively.

Application process

To submit an interest in the role, applicants must follow the online process provided by the employer and complete every section of the form. All required documents must be included for the submission to be considered complete.

  • A resume that clearly shows relevant experience and the corresponding start and end dates. The resume must be no longer than two pages.
  • Supporting documents, where applicable.
  • College transcripts if education is being used to qualify or if a positive education requirement applies.
  • Veterans must provide DD 214 documentation; disabled veterans must provide DD 214, SF-15, and a VA letter dated 1991 or later.

Salary and compensation

The stated pay range for this position is $103,236 to $133,200. Compensation may vary based on base pay, locality pay, and availability pay.

Eligibility and requirements

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
  • Applicants must be eligible to obtain a Top Secret Sensitive Compartmented Information clearance.
  • Willingness to travel as needed is required.
  • Candidates must satisfy the FBI’s employment eligibility standards.
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher is required, preferably in accounting or a related area such as business administration, finance, or forensic accounting, from a U.S.-accredited college or university.
  • All degrees must be verified through official college transcripts.
  • The employer is an equal opportunity employer and reviews all qualified applicants without discrimination based on protected or non-merit factors.
