Job description
Role overview
The FBI is offering a special agent opportunity that draws on an education or teaching background and applies it to federal law enforcement. This role supports national security by investigating violent crime, cyber threats, terrorism, fraud, and other emerging risks. It is intended for professionals who can analyze complex information, spot patterns, and help turn data into actionable investigative insight.
This vacancy is exempt from the federal civilian hiring freeze.
The position is designed for someone moving from a specialized career into a broader investigative path. The FBI emphasizes adaptability, critical thinking, resilience, professional development, competitive pay, benefits, and a work environment that supports balance and growth.
How your background fits
Experience in education and teaching can transfer well to this role because it builds strong reasoning, attention to detail, and the ability to organize information clearly. The FBI highlights relevant exposure to areas such as Adobe Photoshop, tutoring, early childhood education, machine learning, leadership development, and work with children, where judgment, flexibility, and concentration are important.
In this role, the knowledge and skills you have built in your previous field are expected to support evidence review, investigative analysis, and decision-making in complex situations.
Key duties
- Investigate possible violations of federal law, cybersecurity incidents, and matters affecting public safety.
- Use sound judgment, initiative, and flexibility to handle demanding investigative assignments.
- Build and maintain working relationships with law enforcement partners at the federal, state, local, tribal, territorial, and international levels.
- Keep the physical fitness level needed for law enforcement readiness.
Application process
Applicants are instructed to begin by selecting the apply option, then continue to the FBI jobs portal. After that, they should start the application, sign in or register if needed, and complete the full submission process.
All sections of the form must be completed, and every required document must be attached for the application to be considered complete.
- A resume that clearly lists relevant experience and the associated start and end dates; the resume must be no longer than two pages.
- Supporting documents as applicable, including college transcripts if qualification is based on education or if a positive education requirement applies.
- Veterans should provide DD 214 documentation; disabled veterans should provide DD 214, SF-15, and a VA letter dated 1991 or later.
Salary
The salary range for this role is $103,236 to $133,200 per year. Pay may vary based on base pay, locality, and availability pay.
Equal opportunity
The FBI states that it is an equal opportunity employer and will consider all qualified applicants without unlawful discrimination, including on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, marital or parental status, disability, genetic information, age, sex, pregnancy-related conditions, personal favoritism, or other non-merit factors.
