Job Description

This role supports the Store Manager in overseeing the efficient processing and distribution of goods at the thrift store. The position involves providing excellent customer service, performing various sales and production tasks, and assisting the manager with task delegation and supervision. Key responsibilities include opening and closing the store, managing daily reporting, authorizing payments, handling returns, resolving guest issues, and contributing to staff training and monitoring. The Supervisor plays a crucial role in maintaining store operations and ensuring a positive guest experience.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assist the Store Manager in directing thrift store operations.
  • Maintain store appearance through diligent tidiness and organization.
  • Implement and monitor loss prevention strategies within budgetary limits.
  • Oversee and participate in facility upkeep, including cleaning, maintenance, repairs, and groundskeeping.
  • Ensure efficient processing of donations and effective store merchandising.
  • Adhere to all legislative requirements and company policies, including Health and Safety, Operations, and Financial procedures.
  • Secure cash and receipts at the end of each shift.
  • Purchase necessary supplies for the thrift store.
  • Prepare weekly sales documentation for the Accounting Operations department.
  • Supervise staff and volunteers, ensuring quality standards are met, especially in the Store Manager's absence.
  • Ensure staff safety by enforcing all safety procedures.
  • Monitor employee performance and labor relations, reporting findings to management.
  • Address and resolve employee and guest concerns, or escalate as needed.
  • Perform other assigned work-related duties.

Financial and Materials Management

  • Regularly handle minor financial transactions and ensure responsible use of resources.
  • Manage, safeguard, and properly process donations, merchandise, facility, and equipment.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment as required.

Working Conditions

  • Work environment includes potential exposure to odors, used or dusty items, and significant temperature fluctuations.
  • May encounter store noise, public interactions, and individuals facing various challenges.
  • Requires a flexible schedule, including Saturdays.
  • Involves regular physical exertion, including lifting and transporting objects up to 29 lbs.
  • May require frequent lifting of weights up to 29 lbs without assistance.
  • Tasks may involve kneeling, twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching.

Education and Experience Qualifications

  • Demonstrated willingness to understand and support The Salvation Army's mission and values.
  • Compliance with the OH&S Act and Regulations, and The Salvation Army's health and safety policies.
  • Ability to pass satisfactory background checks as determined by The Salvation Army.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Education, Qualifications, and Certifications

  • High School completion is required.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • Between 1 to 2 years of relevant experience, including retail and supervisory roles.
  • Proficiency in cash handling is mandatory.

Skills and Capabilities

  • Brand awareness is advantageous.
  • Basic mathematical skills for calculations (discounts, percentages) and reading comprehension.
  • Experience with cash registers, debit, and credit card processing is beneficial.
  • Physical ability to lift/move up to 29 pounds regularly.
  • Demonstrate careful handling of Salvation Army property.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Commitment to mandatory orientation, ongoing professional development, and training.
  • Represent the organization professionally and positively.
  • Strict adherence to all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and relevant legislation.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $18.30 to $22.87 per hour, with a potential maximum of $27.44 per hour. Salary placement will depend on market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate's experience, skills, and qualifications.
