Job description

Role overview

An opportunity has opened for an enthusiastic and driven individual to join the sleep service at Leicester General Hospital. This role suits someone who is keen to broaden their skills while contributing to high-quality diagnostic and treatment care, with a strong focus on putting patients first.

About the role

The successful candidate will work within a sleep diagnostics and treatment environment, supporting a broad mix of clinics and tests. The post is intended for someone with strong technical capability, good clinical awareness, and a genuine interest in improving the patient journey.

Clinic and test exposure

  • CPAP initiation clinics
  • Follow-up technical CPAP clinics
  • Full polysomnography (PSG)
  • Multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT)
  • Home sleep study testing (HSS)
  • WatchPAT (WPAT)
  • Oximetry
  • Actigraphy

Training and development

Full training will be provided across the listed activities. The post holder is expected to achieve sign-off on core competencies within 18 months of starting and to complete all remaining competencies within 24 months.

Service improvement and leadership

In addition to day-to-day clinical work, the role will involve contributing to the ongoing development of the service, helping maintain departmental standard operating procedures and guidelines, and supporting the training and supervision of staff, students, and visiting placement learners.

Once all competencies have been achieved, the post will move up to band 6. At that stage, the role will include broader support for senior physiologist responsibilities such as appraisals, trainee mentoring, and acting in a tech-in-charge capacity.

Organisation strategy and values

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has a 2023–2030 strategy built around four main priorities: delivering high-quality care for everyone, being an excellent place to work, building partnerships for impact, and advancing research and education. The Trust also aims to actively reduce avoidable health inequalities and works with communities to do so.

The organisation’s values are compassion, pride, inclusivity, and teamwork.
