Job description

Role overview

This fixed-term opportunity sits within Stats NZ’s website redevelopment programme and is an entry-level position designed to help shape a newly created role. The assignment runs until December 2026, with the possibility of a further three-month extension. It is a full-time role based in either Wellington or Christchurch.

In this role, you will help prepare, review, set up, test, and process content for a new website. The goal is to ensure migrated information is accurate, logically organised, and simple for users to locate. You will gain hands-on exposure to digital content workflows, website quality checks, metadata and tagging, documentation, and content management systems while working with project, change, data, and communications specialists.

This position is ideal for someone who is curious, careful, and eager to build practical experience in digital communications, information systems, and public service work.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the redevelopment of the organisation’s website by assisting with content migration and website-related tasks.
  • Review, prepare, configure, and process website content to ensure it is accurate and easy to navigate.
  • Carry out testing of website content and report issues clearly when something does not work as expected.
  • Assist with metadata, tagging, and documentation to help improve content organisation and searchability.
  • Work closely with project, data, change, and communications teams in a collaborative environment.
  • Follow instructions, use test plans, and help maintain quality and consistency across migrated content.

What you’ll need

  • A relevant tertiary qualification, currently progressing toward one, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Confidence using common office tools and Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, online meeting platforms, and chat tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, plus the ability to read carefully and write in a way that works for different audiences.
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and an analytical approach to checking content and recording issues.
  • A willingness to learn, ask questions, take direction, and work both independently and with support when needed.
  • Good people skills and a constructive, team-oriented attitude.
  • Interest in data, websites, digital content, or how information supports better decisions; prior CMS experience such as Drupal would be helpful but is not essential.

Additional qualities valued in this role

Stats NZ values transferable skills from all backgrounds, including unpaid work, and encourages applicants to bring their full unique self. Across all roles, the organisation looks for people who act with integrity, take ownership, focus on delivering value, stay curious, treat others with respect, and collaborate across teams to achieve shared outcomes. You do not need to know everything; what matters most is genuine interest, commitment, and a readiness to grow.

About the organisation

Stats NZ is New Zealand’s national statistics office, responsible for leading data and insights that support decisions across government, communities, and businesses. Its work contributes to the story of Aotearoa New Zealand and helps improve outcomes for people, the economy, and the environment. The organisation is committed to strengthening the data system and enabling equitable access to high-quality data.

Benefits and conditions

  • 37.5-hour work week.
  • 15 days of sick leave, which can be used for yourself or someone in your care.
  • Three additional leave days during the end-of-year office closure.
  • Access to flu vaccinations, an Employee Assistance Programme, and corporate discounts on a range of services and products.
  • Opportunities for career development and progression.

The salary is $57,403 to $63,080 pro-rata, plus KiwiSaver.
