About the organization
Action Against Hunger works internationally to fight hunger through prevention, treatment, advocacy, and practical solutions. The organization supports communities affected by climate change, conflict, inequality, and emergencies, reaching millions of people each year with proven programs. It operates as a nonprofit network across multiple countries, with a large international workforce and country-level operations.
Role purpose
The driver will be responsible for transporting staff, visitors, parcels, and other authorized items for the field office in Mantapala, Luapula Province, while also helping keep vehicles mechanically sound, clean, insured, and roadworthy.
Key duties
- Operate assigned program vehicles as instructed and provide secure, efficient transport for staff and visitors.
- Follow traffic laws and road safety rules to protect passengers, cargo, and the vehicle.
- Carry out long-distance driving when needed, with or without staff on board.
- Keep vehicles clean, orderly, and properly documented, including valid insurance and road license.
- Perform routine checks on oil, fuel, brakes, lights, windscreen wipers, water levels, and tyre pressure, and report any fault or unusual condition promptly.
- Track vehicle maintenance and service schedules, and remind the supervisor in advance when servicing is due.
- Maintain logs and paperwork, including accident reports, incident notes, and other required forms.
- Take the correct steps in the event of an accident and immediately report defects or breakdowns requiring attention.
- Monitor the availability of spare parts, jack, and tools, and carry out minor repairs such as tyre changes and refuelling.
- Ensure vehicles are used only for approved official purposes and report any unauthorized use or incident.
- Deliver documents, parcels, letters, and other approved items to offices and businesses as needed.
- Handle any other vehicle-related tasks assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and experience
The role requires an Advanced Driving Certificate, a Secondary School Certificate with a pass grade, and a valid Class C driving licence with a clean or proven good driving record. The candidate must also be able to communicate in basic English.
Skills and personal qualities
The ideal candidate should have at least 5 years of experience in a similar role. Prior work with an international NGO will be an advantage. The role also calls for someone who can work with limited supervision, remain alert and dependable, stay calm under pressure, communicate well, and work both independently and as part of a team. Strong organization, planning, flexibility, adaptability, and multitasking ability are important.
