It works on behalf of consumers by producing testing, research, and campaigning content across a wide range of consumer topics. The organisation aims to build informed and confident consumers whose collective voice can drive positive change across Aotearoa.

The opportunity

This is a strong opportunity to join a motivated, mission-led content team. The role is suited to a journalist who can produce a wide mix of material, including online articles, social media videos, investigative magazine features, and other content formats. You will contribute to Consumer NZ’s kaupapa of advocating for fairness for New Zealanders.

In a normal day, you might begin by organising a product or taste test, then move on to writing a hard-hitting story later in the day, with the social team possibly pulling you into a video appearance along the way.

The position calls for high-quality, timely writing and a strong level of independence. Alongside writing, the team is especially interested in candidates who bring extra experience in video and audio production.

What you will be doing

• Coming up with story ideas using search data, test outcomes, member feedback, advocacy activity, and topical consumer issues.
• Producing 8 to 10 strong pieces of content each week, from short news updates to substantial investigations that help create change.
• Using critical thinking, data analysis, and sound judgment to manage legal risk.
• Creating social media content by writing, filming, and appearing on camera to help grow the organisation’s social channels and widen its reach.

About you

You are an experienced journalist who can identify strong leads and pursue stories independently and efficiently. You should be a confident writer, and it will be an advantage if you also bring skills in video, audio, and social media content creation.

You can produce accurate, timely, trustworthy news and investigative pieces that connect with broad audiences. Strong time management is essential, as you will need to juggle several stories and deadlines at once.

Experience and background

• At least 3 years of experience in the media industry.
• A solid history of producing balanced, in-depth journalism.
• Digital publishing experience and a good working knowledge of SEO.
• Experience presenting on camera or working behind a microphone is preferred.

Location

The position is based in Wellington’s CBD, in a lively and collaborative office environment.
