Role overview
This position supports linen services at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, England. The role focuses on making sure wards and departments receive the right quantity of clean linen, keeping stock controlled, and helping the wider linen operation run smoothly across weekday and weekend cover.
You will work as part of a large NHS trust with a strong emphasis on teamwork, service quality, inclusion, and ongoing development. The post involves contact with wards, public areas, storage spaces, and the linen service team, and it requires a practical, hands-on approach.
Key duties
- Supply wards with the correct amount of clean linen through the top-up process.
- Support the induction of new starters through the buddy programme.
- Carry out planned tasks or ad hoc requests within the required timescale, following company policy.
- Remove clinical and non-clinical waste, together with laundry, from departments when needed.
- Hang curtains on wards and in departments when requested by the Supplies Coordinator or supervisors.
- Use the CARPS task management system to help manage linen service activity effectively.
- Record linen stock levels using handheld terminals.
- Complete linen quality checks in line with contract requirements and report any issues to the linen service supervisor.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties assigned by the line manager.
- Sort, count, record, and check linen in and out accurately.
- Use the Hive system when required; training will be provided.
- Clean and keep storage areas, corridors, and public spaces in good order.
- Restock linen trolleys, cupboards, and guest service items.
- Provide strong weekend support to the linen service.
Working conditions
This role can involve working in unpleasant environments, including exposure to urine, vomit, excrement, and requests to remove body fluid spillages in public areas where applicable. You may also work around terminally ill, dying, and/or aggressive patients.
