Role overview
The Estates Operational Team is looking for a driven Mechanical Craftsperson to help maintain and support vital building services in a busy hospital environment. This position suits someone with a strong mechanical background and hands-on maintenance experience who wants to contribute to a reliable, high-quality estates service.
The role covers the upkeep and smooth operation of essential systems such as water, heating, steam, and HVAC. Prior exposure to estates maintenance is important, and experience in a healthcare setting, together with familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS), would be a plus.
You should be dependable, proactive, and comfortable working both on your own and with others, often without close supervision. Good communication, a positive approach, and a willingness to learn new skills are key to success.
Main duties
- Inspect, test, repair, and install plant, equipment, and infrastructure across trust property as instructed.
- Complete assigned work orders and record the finished work clearly and accurately in line with estates procedures.
- Log defects found during routine inspections, planned preventative maintenance, or normal duties through the estates reporting system by raising a work docket.
- Carry out scheduled preventative maintenance tasks and complete the required reports neatly and in accordance with trust policies.
- Identify the parts or equipment needed to complete assigned tasks and source them through the estates stores process, following Trust Standing Financial Instructions.
- Examine technical faults when directed, determine the lasting repair needed, and support continued reliability and statutory compliance.
- Assist estates colleagues at all levels with technical work and troubleshooting when asked.
Organisation information
The post sits within the BSW Hospitals Group, a formal partnership made up of Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust. Together, the Group employs more than 17,600 people and works with a budget of £1.6 billion to provide care for over 1 million people.
The partnership is focused on building a health and care system that better serves patients, staff, communities, and partner organisations. Its priorities include improving access, experience, and outcomes, supporting colleague experience, and addressing shared issues such as sustainability and finances.
The Trust promotes a compassionate and inclusive workplace where kindness is encouraged and diversity is valued. Staff wellbeing is prioritised, and the organisation highlights benefits including support for career development and facilities such as a pool.
Additional information about living and working in Bath, staff benefits, and future healthcare projects such as the Dyson Cancer Centre and research commitments is also referenced in the original role advert.
Qualifications and experience
An appropriate mechanical apprenticeship, training, or equivalent level of technical knowledge is required.
On the desirable side, the employer would like candidates with ONC-level education or GCSEs in English, technical, or scientific subjects.
Applicants should have more than 4 years of trade-specific experience. Previous work in a hospital or similar environment would be beneficial.
Skills and personal qualities
The successful candidate must be able to follow both spoken and written instructions, work on their own initiative, and contribute effectively as part of a team. Confidence in a chosen mechanical specialism is essential.
Strong communication skills, including the ability to give and receive instructions clearly, are desirable.
Eligibility and compliance
Applicants who do not already have the right to work in the UK may not be considered unless another acceptable right-to-work arrangement can be provided. Anyone who would require sponsorship, including some candidates with a graduate visa, should check the official government eligibility guidance before applying.
This role also requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check for unspent criminal convictions.
