Role overview

HM Prison and Probation Service is looking for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Guys Marsh. This is a hands-on role that helps keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently.

What the job involves

You will work as part of a supportive team handling a wide mix of daily tasks. These may include security checks and searches at the gate, overseeing deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone calls and CCTV. The role blends office-based duties with physically active work such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison grounds.

No formal qualifications are required. The job is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed under pressure, and can make sensible decisions. Being a reliable team player is especially important in this fast-moving environment.

Working pattern and environment

You will be expected to work different shifts, including weekends and nights, so the prison can continue to run smoothly around the clock. Contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, though occasional interaction may happen depending on the prison.

Career development

This position offers a strong introduction to how a prison operates and can open doors to other roles within the prison system. It may also create a route to the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this role is £29,432. In addition to base pay, you will receive a package of benefits and support for development.
