Role overview
HMP Guys Marsh is hiring an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently. This position is a hands-on support role within a busy custodial environment, where you will assist with a wide range of daily tasks.
The work is varied and active, blending desk-based duties with practical tasks such as lifting, carrying, walking across the prison grounds, and escorting vehicles. You will contribute to gate security, search procedures, delivery handling, visitor supervision, and the monitoring of calls and CCTV.
What the role involves
This role supports the smooth running of the prison by carrying out essential operational tasks as part of a team. It is designed for someone who stays composed, communicates clearly, and uses sound judgement in a fast-moving setting.
Although contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, there may be occasional interaction depending on the establishment.

No formal qualifications are required. The role may suit someone who is calm under pressure, practical, reliable, and comfortable working collaboratively. Strong common sense, good decision-making, and teamwork are important for success.
Shift pattern
You should expect to work a range of shifts, including weekends and nights, as part of the prison’s operational cover.

This position can build valuable knowledge of prison operations and may open the door to other roles within the prison service, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Pay and benefits
The annual salary for this post is £29,432. Alongside base pay, the role includes 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated on a pro-rata basis.
