Role overview
Mackay Regional Council is looking for an arborist to join its Parks & Open Spaces team in Mackay, Queensland. This role focuses on practical tree care, arboriculture support, and helping maintain a safe and attractive public open space network for the community.
You will work as part of a crew under the guidance of a Supervisor or Team Leader, contributing to day-to-day tree maintenance and broader project delivery. The position sits within a banded Level 3-5 structure, and the level offered will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.
Candidates who are not yet fully qualified are still encouraged to apply. Council can provide learning and career development support so the successful applicant can build skills while completing arboricultural qualifications and other required training through Council.
What the role involves
- Carry out tree pruning and removal work, from routine maintenance tasks through to more specialised arboriculture activities.
- Check tree condition, identify risks, and help determine maintenance needs or recommended actions.
- Put up and take down banners and decorations, including tasks that require work at height.
- Use and care for small plant, power tools, and other equipment used in arboriculture work.
- Help with the upkeep of trucks and other major machinery used by the team.
- Use digital devices and systems for communication, recording information, and managing work orders.
- Complete planned tasks and help deliver assigned projects successfully.
- Meet customer and stakeholder expectations while protecting Council’s public image and reputation.
- Support and guide less experienced team members where required.
- Take on other reasonable duties assigned by your supervisor that fit within the scope of the position.
Qualifications and licences
Essential
- General Construction Induction Training.
- Queensland Class C driver licence, or an equivalent interstate licence. If you hold an interstate licence, it must be transferred to Queensland within three months of starting.
- Medium Rigid licence for Level 4-5.
- Elevating Work Platform high-risk work licence for Level 4-5.
- Working at Heights ticket for Level 4-5.
- Agricultural Chemicals Distribution Control licence for Level 4-5.
- Chainsaw Level 1, 2 and Pole Saw ticket for Level 4-5.
Desirable
- Certificate III in Arboriculture for Level 4, or Diploma in Arboriculture for Level 5.
- Training in operating a vehicle loading crane for Level 4-5.
- Training in ground-based rigging for arboriculture for Level 4.
- Training in aerial rescue for Level 5.
