Assistant Psychologist

Role overview

This position supports the delivery of psychological care for clients using the Brent Integrated Psychology and Psychotherapy Service, as well as residents living in the Borough of Brent. The postholder will help deliver psychological assessment and intervention work under the direction of a qualified psychologist, following an agreed plan and operating within service procedures and policies.

The role also includes clinically related administration, audit support, statistics collection, involvement in research or audit development, teaching support, and project-based work.

Main responsibilities

You will carry out structured psychological assessments using tools such as neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect observations, and semi-structured interviews with clients, families, and others involved in care.

You will help formulate and deliver care plans for psychological treatment and management, working under supervision in both community and residential settings.

The post involves supporting and helping to run therapeutic groups, collaborating with other staff to assess clients and prepare for multidisciplinary reviews, and contributing to a psychologically informed approach across all care settings.

Other duties include attending multidisciplinary meetings, monitoring people on assessment and treatment waiting lists, supporting project evaluation, and assisting with service-related administration and data work.

The role sits within the North London borough of Brent. Qualifications and experience

Applicants must be entitled to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society. Additional postgraduate training in professional psychology, mental health practice, or research design and analysis is desirable.

Experience of working with people who have mental health problems or other disabilities is essential. Paid experience in direct care provision and experience administering neuropsychological assessments would be advantageous.

Skills and knowledge

Strong written and verbal communication skills are needed, including the ability to work effectively in emotionally charged situations and to share sensitive information with patients, carers, and colleagues in a way that reduces resistance.

You should understand trauma-informed care, the needs and challenges faced by people with mental health problems or other disabilities, and how psychological knowledge applies in a healthcare setting. Familiarity with using microcomputers for database work and data analysis, particularly SPSS for Windows, is desirable, as is a high standard of report writing and awareness of mental health issues across the lifespan.

Working style

The post requires someone who can accept supervision positively and use it effectively. A genuine interest in developing a career in professional psychology would be an advantage.
