Role overview
This position is responsible for keeping school facilities clean, orderly, safe, and welcoming so students have a comfortable environment for learning, recreation, and development. The role is classified as non-exempt.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma is preferred.
- Working familiarity with custodial practices is expected.
- The candidate should show clear ability or aptitude to handle the assigned tasks.
- Other equivalent qualifications may be accepted if the Board considers them appropriate.
Reporting line
The custodian reports to the Executive Director of Operations and to the Principals.
Job purpose
The main objective of the role is to provide a clean, efficient, attractive, and safe space for students to learn, play, and grow.

- A pre-employment criminal background screening is mandatory.
Distinctive aspects of the role
- The job includes operating power equipment for floor buffing, floor restoration, and carpet shampooing.
- Regular cleaning work includes dusting, mopping, vacuuming, emptying trash, and sanitizing restrooms.
- Basic upkeep of custodial equipment is also part of the position.

Responsibilities
- Carry out routine custodial tasks such as dusting, mopping, vacuuming, restroom cleaning, and replenishing general cleaning, restroom, and disinfectant supplies.
- Request cleaning supplies early enough to avoid interruptions in daily work.
- Report equipment maintenance needs and supply issues to the warehouse manager.
- Collect waste from receptacles, place it in compactors or dumpsters, and bag trash for disposal in classroom and office areas.
- Unlock rooms and doors and ensure they are secured again after cleaning.
- Communicate concerns and facility needs to the proper staff, including suggesting or submitting work orders and checking stock levels.
- Take proper care of equipment and supplies while supporting safe and environmentally responsible work practices.
- Help train new employees on standard procedures.
- Complete cleaning tasks specific to assigned buildings or seasonal/project needs.
- Assist with snow removal, minor maintenance, furniture movement, or similar tasks when needed.
- Handle other assigned job-related duties.
- Check the U.S. flag and request a replacement when it becomes faded or weathered.
- Take responsibility for closing the building each day, including confirming that doors are locked and windows are shut.
- Move furniture or other items inside the building for activities as directed by the Principal or Building Manager.
Working conditions and physical demands
This is physically demanding work and involves lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds as a regular part of the job. More than 65% of the role is physical work. The position includes some exposure to hazards and requires basic safety precautions. The environment may involve extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and loud noise at times.
While performing the job, the employee will frequently stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle tools or controls, and communicate by speaking or listening. The role also requires squatting, stooping, kneeling, reaching overhead, and reaching forward. Hand strength is used continuously throughout the day. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 90 pounds. Work is primarily indoors, with occasional outdoor duties. Contact with caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, sprays, and non-household dust may occur. Noise levels are usually moderate, though they may occasionally be loud.
Terms of employment
This is a twelve-month position. Salary and the work year will be set by the Board. Performance will be reviewed under the Board's evaluation policy for Support Services Personnel.
