Role overview
Microsoft is looking for a Data Center Technician to support the build, deployment, upkeep, and decommissioning of hardware within its cloud infrastructure. In this role, you will stage and install equipment, troubleshoot and diagnose issues, and carry out hardware removals or refresh activities by following documented standard operating procedures. The position is designed to help you build deeper knowledge of data center processes, strengthen mentoring and collaboration skills, and gain exposure to security and data-handling practices.
This role sits within Microsoft Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I), the organization that underpins Microsoft’s cloud services. The team helps deliver the infrastructure behind services such as Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Microsoft Azure. CO+I also emphasizes employee development through career rotation opportunities, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and professional certifications.

Responsibilities
- Carry out diagnostics and troubleshooting by following standard procedures, pinpoint root causes quickly, and replace defective parts with minimal disruption to customers and operations.
- Complete post-work checks to confirm grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling meet safety rules, deployment standards, and planned network design tasks.
- Remove and decommission hardware for straightforward changes and refresh activities, such as memory upgrades or rebuilds, with limited supervision.
- Document, communicate, and escalate incidents to the relevant data center operations managers, technician leads, or engineering specialists as required.
- Support other technicians on complex tasks and provide guidance when needed.
- Complete role-related training and learn from more experienced technicians through hands-on observation and practical exposure.
- Contribute to a collaborative team atmosphere by sharing information, participating in meetings, asking questions, and staying updated on team progress.
- Take ownership of service quality, task completion, and the overall user experience, while demonstrating accountability for data center facilities.
- Work in line with Microsoft’s culture, values, and expectations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
- Basic understanding of computer hardware and components.
- Experience supporting IT equipment or similar technology.
- Ability to satisfy Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements.
- Willingness to complete the Microsoft Cloud background check at hire or transfer and again every two years thereafter.
Preferred qualifications
- Prior experience supporting IT equipment or related technology.
- Relevant certifications such as CompTIA A+, CompTIA Server+, CompTIA Network+, or Basic Structure Cabling (BSC).
