About the company

Contact is a New Zealand-based energy, mobile, and broadband business with a strong focus on improving life for customers and communities across Aotearoa. The organisation is working to advance renewable energy and modernise the customer experience, while fostering a collaborative workplace where people learn from one another and contribute to a shared purpose.

About the team

The role sits within the Wholesale Market area, specifically the Market Strategy & Portfolio team. This group is responsible for balancing risk, performance, and opportunity across electricity and gas portfolios. The work combines market insight with commercial decision-making and has a direct influence on outcomes across short- and mid-term horizons.

The team works closely with real-time traders, fuel specialists, and portfolio experts in a fast-moving environment where analysis, timing, and judgement matter.

About the role

This is a 6-month fixed-term position covering a secondment. Based ideally in Wellington, you will support market strategy, trading decisions, and fuel-related activities as an Energy Analyst. The role requires working with data, drawing practical conclusions, and helping ensure portfolio decisions are commercially strong and made at the right time.

An on-call requirement is part of the position, with one week of on-call duties in every four-week period.

What you will do

  • Create and keep up to date short-term electricity and gas strategies by monitoring market conditions for risks and opportunities.
  • Support traders in real time, particularly when conditions are dynamic or highly pressured.
  • Assist with mid-term portfolio optimisation, including reservoir-related decisions and broader portfolio trade-offs.
  • Carry out operational tasks such as gas nominations and short-term trading actions.
  • Work with internal teams so that strategic decisions reflect immediate needs as well as longer-term considerations.
  • Review results and look for ways to strengthen systems, processes, and overall performance.

What you will bring

You do not need to meet every requirement, but you should bring strong judgement, curiosity, and the ability to work through complexity with confidence.

Essential background and experience includes:

  • A tertiary qualification in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related subject.
  • Experience working with data and translating it into clear, practical insights.
  • The ability to explain complex information clearly to different audiences.
  • Confidence to make recommendations or decisions even when information is incomplete.
  • A cooperative working style that builds trust and contributes positively to a team.

It would also be helpful to have:

  • Previous exposure to the energy sector or related markets.
  • Understanding of energy markets, trading settings, or portfolio optimisation.
  • Experience using tools such as Python, R, Excel, or energy modelling software.
  • Experience working with digital tools or improving business processes.

The organisation also values the way you work:

  • You stay curious and are willing to engage with complex problems.
  • You can make decisions while remaining open to feedback and challenge.
  • You communicate well, listen carefully, and value different perspectives.

Additional information

This role is primarily based in Wellington, where most of the Wholesale Market team works. However, the fixed-term contract can be performed from elsewhere in New Zealand, and applications are welcome from across Aotearoa.

Benefits mentioned include flexible working, supportive leadership and colleagues, a Good to be Home payment for home setup and wellbeing, and other employee perks.

The employer is committed to inclusion, belonging, and a workplace where people feel respected, valued, and able to bring their whole selves to work. The hiring approach is designed to support diverse perspectives and reduce bias. Employee wellbeing is supported through initiatives and resources for physical, mental, financial, and emotional health, along with flexible arrangements, employee network groups, and a market-leading parental leave policy.

Only candidates who have the right to live and work in New Zealand will be considered.

Applicants who do not meet every listed criterion are still encouraged to apply if they believe they are a strong fit.

Recruitment agencies should note that unsolicited CVs are not accepted unless there is a confirmed agreement in place with the talent team. If an unsolicited CV is received, the company may contact the candidate directly and consider them for current or future roles without any obligation to the agency. This also applies to CVs sent directly to hiring managers.

Applications close on Friday 3 July.
