Overview
The Emergency Room Assistant supports the care team by handling communication, supply and equipment requests, and day-to-day coordination tasks. This role helps nursing staff, physicians, patients, other departments, and visitors by taking care of receptionist and clerical work that keeps the Emergency Department operating smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome patients and family members in a courteous manner.
- Respond to questions directly or connect the person with someone who can assist.
- Answer incoming calls within 3 rings, introduce yourself, and identify the unit.
- Pass messages along clearly and without delay.
- Respect and protect patient confidentiality at all times.
- Operate the EMS radio and handheld radio as needed.
- Serve as a point of support for nursing staff and other support teams.
- Inform nursing staff immediately about STAT orders.
- Use the computer system to enter orders.
- Send orders to the pharmacy by fax when appropriate.
- Accurately transcribe orders when required.
- Record STAT orders correctly during Cerner downtime procedures.
- Use approved abbreviations properly when documenting on the medication administration record during Cerner downtime procedures.
- Print the ED Register Log accurately.
- File documents in patient charts as required.
- Complete patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Request supplies from stores through the Lawson system.
- Participate in all required safety training and understand general, departmental, and job-specific safety responsibilities and hazards.
- Follow exposure control procedures for bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
- Treat patients, families, visitors, and coworkers with dignity, professionalism, and respect.
- Work cooperatively with the department team and across departments to help meet unit goals.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
This position requires strong communication and documentation skills, along with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people. Candidates should be comfortable with clerical, coordination, and basic technical tasks in a fast-paced emergency care setting.
Education
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Vocational training or an associate degree in a secretarial-type field is preferred.
Experience
- At least 2 years of experience is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- BLS certification is required within 30 days of employment.
