Overview
An established precision engineering and advanced manufacturing business is hiring an Estimator to join its Machine Shop team. The company works on technically demanding projects for customers across multiple industries worldwide and is seeking someone who can help win and deliver subcontract machining and metal finishing work.
This opportunity suits an engineering, manufacturing, or estimating professional who wants a stable long-term role with room to grow, supported by training, development, and progression in a challenging technical environment.
Compensation and benefits
The package includes a base salary of £45,000, plus commission, holidays, pension, progression opportunities, and additional benefits.
Role overview
In this position, you will prepare quotations, assess customer requirements, and help move projects from initial enquiry through to order placement. You will work closely with Purchasing, Production Control, Sales, and Manufacturing teams to ensure pricing, feasibility, and delivery planning are accurate.
Key responsibilities
- Examine customer needs using CAD files, technical specifications, and engineering documents.
- Create detailed quotes and proposals for subcontract machining and metal finishing jobs.
- Evaluate project costs and profit margins with the Machine Shop Manager.
- Determine whether specific RFQs should be pursued.
- Support Sales Order Processing and Production Control with ERP data entry and order handling.
- Communicate with customers about quotations, active work, and delivery timelines.
- Coordinate with Purchasing and Manufacturing teams to make sure costing is accurate.
What we're looking for
The ideal candidate is organised, proactive, and self-driven, with a background in engineering, manufacturing, estimating, or engineering-related business development. You should be comfortable working in a busy environment, handling several priorities at once, and communicating clearly with customers and internal teams.
Required skills and experience
- Background in engineering, manufacturing, estimating, or technical sales/business development.
- Understanding of CNC machining and manufacturing workflows.
- Ability to interpret CAD drawings and engineering drawings accurately.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Customer-oriented approach.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines.
- Confident use of Microsoft Office applications and general business software.
- Interest in training, development, and long-term career growth.
