Role Overview

The Jed Foundation (JED) is moving toward a merger with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to create AFSP/JED, a major nonprofit focused on suicide prevention across the lifespan. In this period of transition, the Manager, Internal Communications will help shape how employees, volunteers, and chapter leaders understand, experience, and stay connected to the new organization.

Reporting to the SVP, Marketing & Communications, this position develops and delivers internal messaging that keeps the combined organization informed, aligned, and engaged. The role combines strategic guidance on sensitive communications with practical ownership of content, channels, and performance measurement.

This is a strong fit for a communicator who works well in fast-moving, mission-driven settings and can turn complex organizational updates into clear, accessible messages.

Why This Role Matters

For a distributed organization, internal communication is a critical way to build alignment and connection to mission. This role helps ensure that staff, volunteers, and chapter leaders receive timely, consistent, and understandable information during a significant organizational change and beyond it.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver internal communication efforts that support organizational priorities, including integration milestones for AFSP/JED.
  • Turn leadership decisions and updates into clear messages for staff, volunteers, and chapter leaders.
  • Maintain a communication calendar that coordinates messages across teams and helps prevent duplication or message fatigue.
  • Work with the CEO, Chief of Staff, CFAO, and Head of HR to prepare emails, talking points, presentations, and other leadership communication materials.
  • Support all-staff meetings, town halls, and leadership announcements from message development through delivery.
  • Advise on tone, timing, channel choice, and clarity for sensitive or high-impact communications.
  • Create communication that reinforces culture, values, and employee engagement.
  • Contribute to messaging around employee experience, change management, and organizational updates.
  • Identify internal storytelling opportunities that showcase staff, mission, impact, and organizational priorities.
  • Manage key internal channels such as the intranet, newsletters, Slack, and email, ensuring they are used consistently and effectively.
  • Produce high-quality, accessible content using plain language and accessibility best practices.
  • Make complex or changing information easy to understand for different internal audiences.
  • Support internal communication for major initiatives, transitions, and organizational milestones.
  • Help managers and chapter leaders share information accurately with their teams and volunteers.
  • Set and track metrics to assess reach, engagement, clarity, and understanding.
  • Use feedback from staff, volunteers, and chapter leaders to strengthen communications over time.
  • Help improve internal communication practices, tools, and workflows as the organization evolves.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years of experience in internal communications, corporate communications, or a closely related field.
  • Background supporting senior leaders and creating executive-level communications.
  • Excellent writing and editing ability, with a talent for simplifying complex information.
  • Experience managing internal messaging across multiple channels such as email, Slack, and newsletters.
  • Hands-on familiarity with employee experience platforms, intranets, and AI-assisted content or analytics tools.
  • Strong coordination, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit, mission-driven, or purpose-led environment.
  • Exposure to HR or People team collaboration.
  • Experience supporting organizational change, transitions, or integration work.
  • Experience using Campaign Monitor or a similar communications platform.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.
  • Sound judgment and discretion when handling sensitive information.
  • Comfort working with visual media tools and repurposing information into different formats.
  • Awareness of communication best practices and accessibility requirements.
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse internal audiences.

Key Competencies
