Job Purpose

This position is expected to provide technical leadership for the unit and guide the team to keep station operations efficient and dependable. The role involves shaping and executing both strategic and tactical plans with peers and section heads, monitoring the condition and operation of major plant equipment, planning preventive actions to avoid future issues, and driving improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the shift in running all units, the switchyard and balance-of-plant systems at the highest practical efficiency.
  • Assist with day-to-day operational tasks, including unit and auxiliary line-ups, equipment changeovers, and regular checks of protection and annunciation systems.
  • Help manage unit operations and respond to abnormal situations such as load throw-off, unit trips, equipment trips and loss of generation.
  • Take part in cold, hot and warm start-ups, normal operating routines, emergency handling and safe shutdown activities.
  • Track machine loading and switchyard equipment status while coordinating with LDC, NLDC and SLDC.
  • Provide direction to desk and field operators to ensure safe and controlled plant operations.
  • Escalate operational issues and significant events to the team lead in a timely manner.
  • Maintain BOP logbooks and verify shift-related entries and activities.
  • Ensure required BOP equipment remains available throughout the shift.
  • Record defects in SAP, including oil, water or steam leakage and any other equipment irregularities.
  • Monitor DSM (Deviation Settlement Mechanism) performance and operate the units to reduce DSM losses.
  • Assist the desk engineer during emergency situations.
  • Support recommissioning activities after AOH and COH.
  • Carry out emergency equipment trials and help restore processes and equipment after interruptions.
  • Follow IMS, AWMS, DISHA and CHETNA standards within the department.
  • Protect personnel and assets by applying safety training and strict safety practices.
  • Ensure plant operations comply with all legal and statutory requirements.
  • Monitor operating practices to keep them aligned with regulatory obligations.
  • Contribute to digitisation initiatives aimed at improving operational performance.
  • Support automation solutions that advance business goals.
  • Help implement process and system enhancements using newer technologies and practical innovation.

Requirements

  • Must hold a BE/B.Tech degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or a closely related engineering discipline from a recognised institution.
  • Should have at least 12 years of experience in power plant operations, particularly in thermal power plants.
  • Prior exposure to the power generation sector, especially thermal power operations, is preferred.
