Network Engineer/Administrator

Role overview

This contract opportunity is for a Network Engineer/Administrator based in Hillsboro, Oregon, working remotely. The position centers on keeping enterprise network environments stable, secure, and available across office, wireless, wide-area, VPN, and data center infrastructure.

Core duties

• Take ownership of day-to-day administration, upkeep, and support for LAN, WAN, WLAN, VPN, and data center networks.
• Set up and operate network hardware such as routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and wireless controllers.
• Track network health, resolve issues quickly, and help sustain high uptime across the environment.
• Build and enforce security controls, including access policies, segmentation, and firewall configurations.
• Handle infrastructure refreshes, firmware maintenance, patch deployment, and overall equipment lifecycle tasks.
• Work with routing and switching technologies such as BGP, OSPF, VLANs, STP, and QoS.
• Partner with internet providers, third-party vendors, and internal stakeholders to close incidents and deliver projects.
• Maintain monitoring, alerting, backup, and disaster recovery processes for the network stack.
• Assist with cloud connectivity for Microsoft Azure and AWS environments.
• Keep topology diagrams, configuration records, SOPs, and other operational documentation current.
• Contribute to capacity planning, performance improvement, and broader network tuning efforts.
• Be available for on-call support when urgent outages or escalations occur.
• Use and support networking platforms and equipment from Cisco, Juniper, Aruba, Palo Alto, and similar vendors.
• Apply strong knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, switching, VPNs, DNS, DHCP, NAT, and core network security concepts.
• Administer firewalls, IDS/IPS solutions, and secure remote access tools.
• Work with monitoring platforms such as SolarWinds, PRTG, and Wireshark.
• Support SD-WAN work, network automation, scripting in Python and Ansible, and cybersecurity-related initiatives.
• Follow ITIL practices and enterprise change management workflows.

Experience and education

A bachelor’s degree in a related discipline is required, along with at least 7 years of relevant experience. Certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, JNCIA, and Palo Alto are preferred.

Additional information

This role includes responsibility for incident response, operational documentation, change control, and coordination across multiple internal and external teams. The work also extends to network optimization, secure access design, and support for modern hybrid infrastructure environments.
