Role overview
ReadMe is looking for a Senior Front End Engineer to take ownership of the product surfaces that developers interact with most often, including the editor, documentation experience, and other interactive parts of the platform. This position blends product design, performance, and developer experience, with a strong focus on making the product fast, intuitive, and enjoyable to use.
Locations mentioned for this role include San Francisco, New York, and Columbus with a hybrid setup, or fully remote within the United States.
ReadMe supports over 5,000 startups and technology companies in creating personalized, interactive developer hubs. The platform is used by teams at companies such as PagerDuty, Samsara, and Nvidia. The company values thoughtful craftsmanship, ownership, collaboration, and a product experience that helps customers build better developer-facing documentation and API experiences.
What you will do
You will join a product team and work closely with designers and other engineers to shape features that feel polished and useful for different customer types, including developers, technical writers, and product owners. The work involves both creating new features and rethinking existing ones so they continue to meet modern product expectations.
Growth expectations
Within the first month, you are expected to land a UI improvement, get familiar with the development process, and understand the codebase, including the React and TypeScript applications, state management, and data flow between server and client. In the following months, you should begin owning larger front-end initiatives from planning through release and make visible improvements in performance, polish, or core user flows. By the end of the first year, you may help guide front-end tooling decisions and contribute major updates used daily by thousands of developers.
Hiring process
The process begins with a resume review and a cover letter that shows your personality and explains what excites you about full stack engineering. If there is a fit, you will have a 30-minute Zoom conversation with Engineering Manager Frank, followed by a second 30-minute Zoom interview with VP of Engineering Moses. After that, there will be a technical assessment with several ReadMe engineers. The final stage is a longer interview session over Zoom that typically lasts 3.5 to 5 hours, includes a one-hour break, can be split across two days if needed, and starts with a 15-minute introductory conversation before moving into one-on-one interviews. The company says you will hear back within a week after that stage, and if there is alignment, an offer may follow.
Benefits and perks
ReadMe offers unlimited PTO with a minimum of three weeks off, fully covered medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee plus full coverage for dependents, a One Medical membership, a gym or fitness allowance of up to $150 per month, donation matching up to $1,000 per year, twelve weeks of paid parental leave after birth or adoption, work-from-home flexibility, and three offsite retreats each year. Candidates are also invited to review the company handbook for additional benefit details.
Culture and inclusion
Applicants who are unsure about fit are encouraged to apply. ReadMe says it is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, and aims to provide a supportive workplace for people with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives. The company is open to hiring in the United States either fully remote, hybrid, or in person at the New York or San Francisco headquarters.
