Role overview

This post is based within Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is primarily attached to Churchill Hospital in Oxford or Katharine House Hospice in Banbury. The role may also require work across any Trust site and, when needed, within community outreach settings.

Clinical role

The appointee will act as a Senior Fellow within the Palliative Medicine team, which operates from Sobell House at Churchill Hospital and Katharine House Hospice in Banbury. The work may be across one or more of the following service areas:

• Specialist inpatient wards at Sobell House or Katharine House, providing 28 beds for adults with life-limiting illness who need intensive symptom relief and end-of-life care.
• The Hospital Palliative Care Team, delivering specialist advisory consultations for adults with life-limiting conditions under the care of specialist teams in the John Radcliffe, Churchill, Nuffield Orthopaedic and Horton Hospitals.
• The Community Palliative Care Team, working with primary care to support symptom management and advance care planning for patients in their own homes or usual place of residence across Oxfordshire and South Northamptonshire, including hub shifts that support rapid response activity in the community.

The post holder will also take part in the on-call rota alongside current Specialist Registrars and Specialty Doctors.

Team and service context

The medical team includes 9 consultants, 1 Associate Specialist, 6 Specialty Doctors, and a number of doctors training in Palliative Medicine and General Practice. The wider service also contributes to the Living Well programme, supportive care services, lymphoedema and bereavement support across two sites in Headington, Oxford and Adderbury, Banbury, as well as Trust-wide leadership in end-of-life care, education and research.

The multidisciplinary team working across these settings includes nurses, allied health professionals, music therapy, art therapy, chaplaincy, social work and support staff, including volunteers. Sessional psychiatric support is also available from a consultant psychiatrist.
