Concordare Trials is an early-stage startup before Series A, focused on building AI-driven software for clinical research teams at academic medical centers. Its products help transform lengthy, unstructured trial protocols into organized, usable data so research staff can spend less time managing documents and more time on core study work.

The Opportunity

This role sits at the intersection of complex clinical-trial operations and the people who use the software every day. The right person will make difficult workflows feel intuitive, bring a user-first mindset to the product, and influence what gets built rather than simply translating requirements into screens. The environment is high ownership, highly autonomous, and intentionally low on bureaucracy.

The engineering foundation is strong, but the team is looking for a design-led partner who naturally simplifies complexity, starts with user needs, and helps raise the standard of the full product experience.

This is not a pure execution role where you receive a specification and produce mockups. You will help shape what the product should look like and how it should work.

What You Will Do

• Own important user journeys end to end, from understanding the problem and researching users through interaction design, prototyping, and implementation in production code.
• Turn dense, complicated tasks into straightforward interfaces that lower friction, reduce unnecessary steps, and minimize mistakes for expert users handling repetitive, high-risk work.
• Observe how real users behave, speak with them directly, and convert those insights into product decisions.
• Develop production-quality UI in React and help keep a reusable, consistent component system healthy over time.
• Create and maintain the public website, including the way the product is presented externally.
• Build out the design system with tokens, components, patterns, and documentation that keep the experience consistent.
• Act as the user advocate on a technically minded team, challenge assumptions, suggest better approaches, and explain the reasoning behind design choices.
• Work closely with backend and platform engineers so the user experience and data model reinforce each other.

What the Company Is Looking For

The ideal candidate begins with the user rather than the feature list and asks whether complexity should be shown at all. They care about craft, including typography, spacing, and interaction details, while still being able to ship work quickly and practically. They are comfortable moving between design tools and code, can explain design decisions to technical teammates, and are ready to serve as the design voice on a small team.

Required Experience and Skills

• At least 3 years of experience designing and building user interfaces, or an equivalent mix of product design and front-end engineering.
• A degree in Human-Computer Interaction is preferred; strong applicants with backgrounds in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or other related technical disciplines are also welcome.
• Solid grounding in UI/UX fundamentals, including interaction design, information architecture, visual hierarchy, and the ability to simplify when needed.
• Strong command of Figma, including components, variants, auto layout, prototyping, and design-system work.
• Comfort using Claude as part of everyday design and prototyping work, including Claude Design, to communicate ideas and move quickly.
• Hands-on front-end development experience with React, including hooks and well-structured component architecture.
• Experience with design systems and component libraries, such as Storybook or a similar tool.
• Background creating data-heavy interfaces such as tables, forms, dashboards, and other complex-state workflows.
• Ability to plan and run user interviews and usability testing, then turn findings into design improvements.
• Working knowledge of accessibility practices, including WCAG, keyboard navigation, and screen-reader support.
• Comfort using Git and contributing directly to a live codebase with engineers.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with TypeScript.
• Familiarity with Next.js; the company website is built with it.
• Exposure to component libraries or utility-first CSS frameworks such as Bootstrap or Tailwind.
• Interest or experience in motion design and micro-interactions.
• Formal graphic design training or comparable experience, such as a technical degree combined with graphic design coursework, a minor, or professional design work.
• Experience working on healthcare, clinical, scientific, regulated, or other expert-user software products where the data is dense and the users are professionals.
• Previous experience as an early or first design hire at a startup.

Logistics

This is a full-time hybrid role based in New York, NY or Pittsburgh, PA. The schedule is four days in the office and one day remote. A portfolio or work samples may be requested, and case studies that show process and decision-making are especially valued.

Candidates must already be authorized to work in the United States. Work visa sponsorship is not available at this time.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $100,000 to $140,000 per year, depending on experience and market factors.
