Role overview
This is a full-time remote opportunity for an AI Manager at LAPREMI – Laboratoire Panafricain de Recherche en Économie, Management et Innovation | UMI - MAROC. The position is centered on leading the creation, build-out, and rollout of AI-based solutions for research and applied work in economics, management, and innovation.
The role spans the full lifecycle of AI projects, from defining the problem and preparing data to selecting models, training, evaluating, and putting solutions into practice. You will work closely with multidisciplinary research teams to shape technical approaches that support the laboratory’s wider research priorities.
Core duties
In day-to-day work, the AI Manager will coordinate AI engineers and data scientists, review code and model outputs for quality and reproducibility, and help ensure that all AI work stays aligned with the lab’s strategic direction.
The role also includes setting and maintaining responsible AI standards, keeping project documentation organized, and enforcing version control practices. In addition, the AI Manager will prepare technical documentation, research-focused reports, and presentations for both internal and external audiences.
There is also a partnership-facing aspect to the role, along with oversight of junior team members and interns. The position requires staying up to date with developments in AI and using those insights to guide methods and technology decisions.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should have a strong grounding in artificial intelligence and machine learning, including classical ML methods, deep learning ideas, and model evaluation techniques, with the ability to turn research questions into effective technical solutions.
A solid background in data work is expected, including collecting, cleaning, transforming, and exploring datasets, preferably using Python, R, SQL, and relevant machine learning libraries.
Experience with software engineering practices for AI work is important, including version control, testing, documentation, and basic MLOps activities such as deployment, monitoring, and lifecycle management.
You should also be able to manage AI projects and teams by planning work, assigning tasks, communicating with stakeholders, and delivering results on schedule and within scope.
Interest in applying AI to economics, management, or innovation research is highly relevant, along with the ability to collaborate well with researchers from non-technical backgrounds.
Strong written and spoken communication skills are needed for academic and research settings, including report writing, publication support, and presenting technical findings to varied audiences.
A Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent hands-on experience with a strong applied portfolio may also be considered.
The role calls for someone who can work independently in a fully remote environment, take initiative, and consistently uphold high standards in ethics, data privacy, and responsible AI practice.
