Role Overview

The organization is hiring a Data Analyst for a long-term engagement in Toronto. This position is suited to someone who can work across data discovery, analysis, migration support, documentation, and modeling while partnering with technical and business teams.

Data Discovery and Analysis

• Review Netezza tables to identify the most important and frequently used assets.
• Spot tables and data assets that are redundant or no longer in use.
• Carry out profiling and quality checks to understand data structure, trends, and irregularities.
• Examine data dependencies and relationships across connected systems.

Migration Assessment

• Assess the migration status from Netezza to Azure by determining how many tables have already been moved.
• Identify which tables still remain to be migrated.
• Check that data stays consistent between Netezza and Azure.
• Assist with migration planning by evaluating business and technical impact.

Data Mapping and Lineage

• Prepare source-to-target mapping documentation.
• Build end-to-end lineage views across systems.
• Record transformation logic and business rules used during the migration process.

Metadata and Documentation

• Create and maintain metadata repositories and definition documents.
• Develop a data dictionary or taxonomy-based asset library.
• Document tables and columns at a detailed level.
• Keep all documentation aligned with enterprise data governance expectations.

Data Modeling

• Carry out data modeling and related mapping work.
• Create conceptual, logical, and physical models.
• Develop domain-oriented models for retail or other business datasets.
• Design models that support analytics, enterprise BI, and reporting use cases.

Development and Implementation

• Write and tune SQL queries for analysis and validation.
• Develop DDL scripts and help deploy data models across environments.
• Use Python or similar scripting tools for data wrangling and transformation.
• Work with data lakes and both structured and unstructured data sources.

Collaboration

• Partner with data engineers, BI and reporting teams, data science teams, and business stakeholders.
• Translate business needs into workable technical data solutions.
• Support downstream data marts, semantic layers, and analytics initiatives.

Experience and Skills

The role calls for more than 4 years of experience in data analysis, data modeling, or data engineering. Strong SQL capability is essential, along with Python or another scripting language. Experience with Netezza and cloud platforms, especially Azure, is preferred. Familiarity with data modeling tools such as ERwin, ER/Studio, or Azure tooling is also needed, together with a strong understanding of data warehousing, analytical workloads, lineage, metadata management, ETL/ELT, and migration approaches.
