Role overview
Fusion5 is seeking a Data Engineer to join its New Zealand Data & Analytics practice. This is a practical delivery-focused role for someone who is comfortable working across the modern data stack, enjoys taking ownership, and can thrive in a consulting setup where each client engagement is different.
The position is available in Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch, and involves building end-to-end data platforms for ambitious organisations across New Zealand. The work spans ingestion, transformation, modelling, reporting, and ongoing support, while collaborating closely with architects, senior consultants, and other delivery teams.
What the role involves
- Designing and delivering modern data platforms from start to finish, including ingestion, transformation, modelling, and warehousing.
- Working with Microsoft Fabric, Azure, and Databricks, including pipelines, notebooks, and lakehouse or medallion-style designs.
- Creating Power BI reports and semantic models when required by the client solution.
- Selecting the most suitable platform or tool for each client situation instead of relying on a single default approach.
- Embedding data quality, security, and governance practices into all deliverables.
- Supporting data migration activity, including CRM and ERP migrations alongside business applications teams.
- Assisting clients after go-live together with the managed services team to help keep platforms operating smoothly.
- Using AI as part of everyday delivery work to improve speed and effectiveness, while continuing to build capability as the team grows.
- Contributing to team standards, reusable assets, documentation, and internal knowledge sharing.
- Helping less experienced team members develop their skills.
What you should bring
The ideal candidate will have practical experience across the modern data stack and be ready to step into a consulting environment with confidence. This includes delivering work with limited supervision, managing timelines, and maintaining high standards throughout the lifecycle of a project.
- Typically 3 to 6 years of hands-on data engineering experience.
- Experience working with Microsoft Fabric, Azure services such as ADF, ADLS, and Synapse, as well as Databricks.
- Strong skills in SQL and Python.
- Solid capability in ETL/ELT pipeline design and data modelling.
- Experience building solutions using lakehouse or medallion architecture.
- Comfort with consulting fundamentals such as requirements gathering, documentation, estimating, and client communication.
- A strong focus on quality, accuracy, and building solutions to standard the first time.
- A collaborative mindset and an interest in contributing positively to team culture.
- The legal right to work in New Zealand and the ability to work with clients across the country.
Nice-to-have experience
Additional experience with Power BI and semantic modelling, Snowflake, dbt, Spark or PySpark, DevOps practices such as Git, CI/CD, Terraform or Bicep, and data governance tools like Microsoft Purview would be an advantage.

- Supportive team culture with a strong emphasis on collaboration.
- Competitive pay, flexible working arrangements, and a focus on work-life balance.
- Birthday leave, volunteer days, and regular social events.
- Clear pathways for development and growth within the practice.
