Role overview
This position is for an EHS Specialist at the Parow Plant Snacks site in Parow, Western Cape. The role focuses on keeping the plant aligned with legal, regulatory, and company environmental, health, and safety standards.
The successful person will help ensure compliance with legislation, GEHSMS, ISO 45001, ISO 14001, PepsiCo requirements, and applicable regulations and by-laws. The role also includes maintaining insurance certification and supporting site-wide EHS performance.
Key responsibilities
- Organize and oversee SHE committee meetings for the Parow manufacturing and warehousing operations.
- Run monthly and annual EHS Steering Group meetings with senior leadership.
- Check, approve, and file meeting minutes for ongoing reference and recordkeeping.
- Keep the EHS action tracker current on a daily and weekly basis, covering accident reports, non-conformance items, hazard reports, and inspection follow-ups.
- Track near misses, make sure action plans are in place, and keep the plant informed on progress.
- Review, update, and manage risk assessments and the related corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with the COIDA Act.
- Maintain records for all critical-task and safe-work practice training.
- Update the training matrix and ensure scheduled refresher training is completed.
- Support and maintain the GEHSMS program in line with all required standards.
- Plan and coordinate emergency drills.
- Review site policies and procedures regularly and implement updates when needed.
- Store and preserve records according to internal and statutory retention requirements.
- Manage MyEHS activities, including gatekeeping, effectiveness reviews, action plan creation, self-assessment submissions, and completion confirmations for compliance tasks.
- Review EHS induction content and verify the effectiveness of assessments.
- Monitor compliance in wastewater treatment and waste management areas.
- Plan and facilitate risk assessments.
- Lead EHS awareness campaigns across the site.
- Help the site meet its EHS annual operating plan targets, including incident reporting, waste, MESS, and other KPIs.
- Support culture and capability initiatives such as townhalls, roundtables, campaigns, and behavioral change efforts.
- Coordinate FM Global compliance requirements and accreditations.
- Track progress on MESS remedial actions and assessments.
- Drive sustainability activities, including AWS-related initiatives.
Requirements
- Matric certificate.
- A 3-year qualification in Safety, Environmental Management, or a closely related field.
- Working knowledge of legal and workplace requirements, with preference for exposure to risk assessments, the OSH Act, COID Act, and relevant environmental laws.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
