About the Role
This preconstruction position plays a central role in shaping which projects the company bids and secures. The estimator will work independently on drawings, specifications, quantity takeoffs, and bid preparation, helping ensure proposals are complete, accurate, and well organized. The role calls for a careful, analytical approach, strong construction understanding, and the discipline to spot risks, gaps, and exclusions before submission.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform independent quantity takeoffs from architectural, structural, and civil drawings, covering items such as tilt-up panel layouts, slab-on-grade, formwork, reinforcing steel, embeds, and lifting hardware.
- Read and apply full ICI specification packages, including Division 03 and related sections, to build accurate scopes and pricing.
- Prepare end-to-end estimates that include materials, labour, equipment, supplier pricing, and subcontractor costs.
- Use knowledge of construction sequencing and site installation methods to improve scoping and identify constructability issues.
- Spot missing scope, unclear details, and exclusions during tender review.
- Produce pricing summaries, cost breakdowns, and proposal documents.
- Oversee the bid process from document review through RFI issuance, quote collection, and final submission assembly.
- Create and send trade-specific invitations to bid.
- Maintain and grow a dependable network of suppliers and subcontractors across concrete, reinforcing steel, forming, embeds, lifting hardware, and related trades.
- Compare and level quotes, then follow up to clarify scope, schedule, risk, and job requirements.
- Keep pricing aligned with historical data, supplier feedback, and current market conditions.
- Check estimated costs against completed project actuals and apply lessons learned to future bids.
- Support handoff to the construction team by explaining assumptions, exclusions, scope, and pricing details clearly.
- Prepare and document change order pricing during construction when required.
- Attend preconstruction meetings with general contractors, consultants, engineers, owners, and internal stakeholders.
- Communicate professionally with clients and project partners to answer questions, clarify scope, and contribute estimating input throughout preconstruction.
Qualifications
- A background in Construction Management, Engineering Technology, Architecture, Civil Engineering, or a similar field is considered an advantage.
- At least 3 years of estimating experience in an ICI construction setting.
- Prior experience with a concrete subcontractor, ICI general contractor, or civil contractor handling significant structural concrete work is preferred.
- Strong ability to interpret drawings and specifications, including large and complex specification sets.
- Comfort using Microsoft Excel, PDF tools, and construction software such as Bluebeam, Revit, or AutoCAD.
- Highly accurate, organized, analytical, and thorough in follow-through.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the confidence to work directly with clients, consultants, suppliers, subcontractors, and internal teams.
- Ability to juggle multiple bids, deadlines, and priorities with limited supervision.
- Positive attitude and eagerness to learn and develop within the company.
- Hands-on field or construction experience is an added asset.
