Role overview

BAM UK & Ireland is looking for a Handyperson to join its facilities management team at the police headquarters in Derby. The position is a 40-hour week, worked Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 5:00pm. Appointment to this post depends on passing Police Vetting.

What the role involves

The Handyperson will take primary responsibility for the building fabric condition of the site, completing planned preventative maintenance as well as reactive repairs as and when they arise. The post also supports the wider site services function and helps ensure the building remains safe, operational, and well maintained.

• Use building fault-finding knowledge and experience to diagnose issues across the site.
• Complete fabric repairs such as ceiling fixes, repainting, skirting and facing replacement, and door servicing.
• Identify replacement parts required for repairs and arrange orders through the correct process.
• Inspect and complete reactive landscape maintenance, including litter picking, in line with project requirements.
• Carry out building fabric inspections and investigate faults.
• Perform monthly legionella checks, including tap temperature testing and flushing of little-used outlets.
• Work with and oversee subcontractors, ensuring method statements, risk assessments, and safe working practices are followed.
• Track and replenish stock for relevant materials and consumables.
• Read and interpret contract papers, including as-built drawings, schedules, and specifications.
• Support the delivery of associated services across the site.
• Carry out porterage duties when needed.
• Help deliver health and safety responsibilities across the location.
• Provide general support as required.
• Maintain the operation of heating plant, fire alarm systems, and lighting systems.
• Record and submit meter readings for utility usage.
• Handle other reasonable tasks as requested.

Candidate profile

The ideal candidate will have experience in a building fabric or multi-skilled engineering role within a busy service environment, with direct exposure to fabric-related defects and repairs. A recognised trade qualification or time-served trades background is expected. Experience or training in general health and safety regulations, plus the preparation of risk assessments and method statements, is important. The role suits someone who is self-driven, able to spot defects without being prompted, and comfortable working on their own initiative. A full driving licence is essential. Basic knowledge of plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems would be an advantage. Strong communication, organisation, and reliability are also important, along with a willingness to join a one-in-three on-call rota.
