Role overview
The Financial Controller will partner with different business teams to keep departmental spending within the approved budget and help ensure costs stay controlled and justified.
Core responsibilities
- Track departmental expenses, compare actual spending with budgets, spot variances, and work with teams to reduce waste, inefficiencies, and leakages.
- Evaluate proposals for team initiatives and spending requests, build or review business cases, and decide whether to approve or decline them based on the financial rationale. Depending on complexity, this may require Excel-based modelling.
- For approved initiatives, conduct follow-up reviews periodically to confirm that the expected benefits and assumptions remain valid after implementation.
- Examine contracts and purchase orders raised by departments or the company to identify financial exposure and verify that they align with the original business case assumptions. No contract should move ahead without controller approval.
- Work with departments to prepare their budgets, identify unnecessary padding as well as gaps caused by underestimation, and ensure budgets are realistic.
- Serve as the main point of contact for finance-related needs from assigned departments.
- Review and sign off on policies that have financial implications.
- Take part in salary structuring discussions, particularly for operational staff.
Required background and skills
- Postgraduate business-school qualification with around 2 years of experience before or after an MBA or CA.
- Prior exposure to accounting and auditing will be considered an advantage.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles.
- Ability to continuously identify ways to make business processes and procedures more efficient.
- Good understanding of regulatory compliance requirements and the ability to help the company stay compliant.
- Effective communication skills.
- Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
- Strong analytical ability.
