Job Purpose
The Residential Worker is responsible for helping maintain a secure and safe setting for residents and visitors.
Key Duties
- Observe residents and clients, remain available for practical, emotional, and morale support, and when required, store and document prescribed medications safely.
- Keep accurate daily records, update logbooks, and complete incident or occurrence reports.
- Communicate with referral partners and outside agencies when necessary, including welfare offices, police, parole services, and urgent-response contacts.
- Support client safety by managing security-related care tasks, including bed checks and room or personal searches where needed.
- Conduct property and grounds inspections or security checks in line with organizational procedures.
- Handle admissions, provide orientation, assess understanding of rules, and help ensure policies are followed, including disciplinary measures when required.
- May process room rental and meal ticket payments and issue receipts.
- May act as the shelter receptionist.
- May prepare or serve basic meals for residents.
- Carry out additional related tasks as assigned.
Education and Experience
Applicants should have completed high school and may also have up to six months of specialized training related to addictions facilities. A different mix of education and experience may also be considered. Prior experience requirements range from more than three months to less than one year, including frontline work in a social services environment.
Required Credentials
- Addictions counselling training for an addictions facility environment.
- Compliance with the listed precautionary measures.
Work Conditions
The role is based in a shelter and/or treatment setting, involves shift work, and may require carrying a pager or walkie-talkie. Travel is minimal or not required. The job includes moderate keyboarding and regular walking rounds. It also requires ongoing concentration, environmental monitoring, camera surveillance, and careful attention while interacting with clients and recording information.

- Working with angry, abusive, or verbally aggressive individuals.
- Periods of isolation and a schedule that can affect personal lifestyle.
- Exposure to possible physical assault, infectious illness, bodily fluids, sharp objects, and other hazardous situations.
Safety and Health Requirements
- Follow universal precautions at all times.
- Have Hepatitis B immunization.
- Be vaccinated against tuberculosis.
- Hold current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Provide a Criminal Police Investigation Check, including VSC.
- Complete non-violent crisis intervention training.
Compensation
The hiring range for this role is $19.12 to $20.37, with a maximum rate of $21.61. Final placement within the range depends on market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.
