Role overview

Key accountabilities

• Direct important infectious disease program work related to respiratory viruses and vaccine-preventable diseases across public health laboratory networks.
• Review laboratory capacity and operational performance, analyze survey findings, and prepare reports that support stronger diagnostic and surveillance systems.
• Create and maintain policy guidance, model practices, and scientific documents connected to infectious disease laboratory operations.
• Coordinate with federal agencies, including CDC-related partners, member laboratories, and outside stakeholders to keep program activities aligned.
• Manage contractors and consultants by defining scope, monitoring deliverables, overseeing contracts, and reviewing performance.
• Assist with budget planning, funding requests, and reporting in partnership with senior leadership.
• Represent the organization at scientific meetings, advisory bodies, conferences, and working groups.
• Plan and lead training sessions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing initiatives that build laboratory capacity across member organizations.
• Track policy and regulatory updates that affect infectious disease testing and communicate important changes to stakeholders in a timely way.
• Supervise a Senior Specialist and contribute to broader cross-functional infectious disease initiatives.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of experience in public health, infectious diseases, laboratory science, or a related program management area; an advanced degree can be used in place of some experience.
• Solid knowledge of respiratory illnesses, vaccine-preventable diseases, and laboratory-based diagnostic and surveillance methods.
• Prior exposure to public health agencies, federal partners, membership-based organizations, or laboratory systems is preferred.
• Understanding of public health policy, regulatory structures, and laboratory practices related to infectious diseases.
• Strong program management ability, including coordinating multi-stakeholder work and supervising contractors.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a background in preparing scientific reports, guidance documents, or policy materials.
• Ability to interpret data and survey results and turn them into clear insights and recommendations.
• Highly organized, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-focused setting.
• Demonstrated success working with scientific, technical, and government stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
• Bachelor’s degree or graduate degree in public health, microbiology, laboratory science, or a related discipline.
