About the Role

This is a hybrid position with 4 days in the office and 1 day remote. The role is open to candidates at all levels. You will interview for Opendoor as a whole rather than for a specific team, and once hired, you will be matched to the area where you can have the biggest impact and enjoy the work most.

The environment is intentionally high-trust and light on process. There are no project managers or scrum ceremonies. Instead, the team works through reviews, proposals, demos, and ownership. Candidates should be comfortable understanding how their work connects to the product and discussing that impact in a meaningful way.

What the Company Is Looking For

The ideal candidate is someone who ships reliably, makes pragmatic technical choices, and knows when a simple solution is the best solution. You should be able to balance careful engineering with the need to move quickly when speed matters.

You are expected to think from first principles, form informed opinions about architecture and distributed systems, and understand the tradeoffs that come with complex, high-touch environments. Strong experience matters more than allegiance to any one programming language or framework.

The team expects familiarity with modern AI tools and prefers people who already use them to work faster and more effectively. Clear communication is also essential: you should be able to write strong design documents, provide helpful code reviews, challenge ideas constructively, and explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Develop production-grade systems that support real customers and real financial activity.
• Take ownership of features from initial design through release and ongoing maintenance.
• Participate in and help drive technical design discussions and reviews.
• Work with AI tools every day and help expand how they are used in engineering workflows.
• Review code, support and mentor teammates, and improve the overall engineering standard.
• Connect infrastructure work with product goals so technical decisions support customer outcomes.

Qualifications

• Extensive software engineering experience with a proven history of delivering production systems that others rely on.
• Strong foundation in at least one general-purpose programming language, plus the ability to learn additional languages quickly.
• Hands-on experience with relational databases and an understanding of how to reason about performance at scale.
• Must be based in, or open to relocating to, Miami, Toronto, or Seattle.

Interview Process

The hiring process is designed to move quickly and to understand how you work in practice.

• 15-minute recruiter phone screen.
• 60-minute technical deep dive focused on a past project or problem you have solved.
• Two 60-minute pairing-style technical review sessions.

These interviews are not meant to test how fast you can solve a puzzle under pressure. The goal is to learn what it feels like to collaborate with you. You will receive an email before each round explaining what to expect.
