Role Overview
Cobalt Service Partners is seeking a Vice President of Operational Excellence to lead performance improvement across its security platform. This is a senior operating position reporting to the President and focused on improving gross margin, strengthening operating systems, and using technology to drive measurable business results across partner companies.
The role sits at the heart of the Security group’s performance engine and is expected to deliver EBITDA improvement through better field execution, stronger labor productivity, cleaner quoting, and disciplined rollout of cross-business initiatives. Success will be measured through portfolio-level impact, including revenue per technician, billable utilization, technology adoption, and a direct EBITDA target.
The company is a private equity–backed platform building a leading commercial access and security integration business in North America. Its partner companies provide mission-critical systems such as access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection, and related low-voltage infrastructure for enterprise, institutional, and commercial customers. Backed by Alpine Investors, the platform has grown quickly through acquisitions and now operates across 12+ security businesses nationwide.
Key Areas of Ownership
- Improve gross margin percentage and gross profit dollars through durable operating changes.
- Lead portfolio-wide margin programs and document financial results before and after implementation.
- Monitor quoted versus actual margin performance and apply consistent tolerance standards.
- Increase field labor productivity and visibility, with a focus on revenue per technician.
- Track billable utilization, manage subcontractor costs, and implement labor tiering models.
- Ensure every business has an up-to-date labor productivity snapshot at least every 30 days.
- Create quoting standards that define labor hours, task complexity, and material cost benchmarks.
- Set up regular job-level cost reviews and a recurring job costing process across the portfolio.
- Evaluate AI, automation, and other technology tools based on financial return and operational value.
- Build technology roadmaps and provide forward-looking recommendations to leadership.
- Drive adoption of operational technology across businesses as a business lever, not an IT exercise.
- Design initiatives that can be repeated across similar companies, with rollout within 90 days where applicable.
- Maintain a live initiative tracker with owners, timelines, and expected financial impact.
- Partner with the Head of Sales on quoting accuracy and CRM adoption at the commercial operations intersection.
- Oversee integration of newly acquired businesses and prevent value leakage in the first 90 days after close.
- Complete ConnectWise and operating system onboarding within committed timelines and establish a baseline within 60 days of close.
- Develop internal leaders so that operational improvements continue without direct oversight from you.
- Build a center-of-excellence model led by the strongest internal operators.
- Establish a delivery model for multi-site enterprise projects with consistent customer experience across locations.
- Assign single-point accountability for every multi-site award, regardless of how many businesses are involved.
Qualifications
- Background in a project-based field services business where you have directly managed dispatch labor, not only advised on it.
- Working knowledge of revenue recognition, job costing, backlog conversion, technician utilization, and job cost reporting.
- Ability to identify margin leakage at the line level from P&Ls and job cost reports and convert insights into lasting operational fixes.
- Experience building and rolling out operating systems across multiple business units at the same time.
- Comfort selecting and deploying technology and AI tools based on measurable financial return.
- Exposure to PE-backed, multi-site, or multi-entity businesses, including M&A integration and post-close value creation.
- Strong analytical capability and a habit of using data to drive decisions, with clear baseline and post-implementation measurement.
- Proven ability to influence without formal authority and gain trust through competence.
- Track record of developing internal talent and leaving teams stronger than you found them.
Core Values
- Unwavering stewardship: respect the legacy of founders and act in the best interests of founders, teams, and customers.
- Excellence in action: hold yourself to a high standard, act boldly, and get things done without excuses.
- Seek and tell the truth: be candid, reliable, and willing to pursue the right answer wherever it leads.
- Love learning: stay curious, humble, and open to changing your mind.
- Enjoy the ride: bring authenticity, assume positive intent, and appreciate the mission and the team.
