About LGNZ
Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) works to strengthen and support councils across the country by providing advocacy, sector connection and practical capability-building. The organisation represents the collective interests of local government, contributes to policy discussions and submissions, runs sector networks and events, and supports development through learning, consulting and other best-practice initiatives.
About the role
Reporting to the Director Commercial and Operations, this position plays a key part in shaping LGNZ's commercial direction and supporting wider organisational priorities. The role focuses on creating value for member councils while helping LGNZ grow and deliver on its strategic goals.
You will take ownership of the delivery and ongoing improvement of two important national programmes: Road Efficiency Group (REG) and Te Korowai, LGNZ's local government excellence programme. Alongside this, you will look for new partnerships and commercial opportunities that expand LGNZ's reach and influence in the sector.
This is a high-profile role that combines commercial thinking, programme oversight and strong relationship management. You will work closely with council leaders, industry partners and other key stakeholders to develop initiatives that build capability, lift performance and contribute to the long-term success of local government across Aotearoa.
Key capabilities and experience
The successful candidate will bring strong relationship management capability and substantial experience leading projects, programmes or commercial initiatives with clear, measurable outcomes.
- Excellent communication skills, including active listening and the ability to turn stakeholder needs into practical opportunities.
- A track record of identifying, developing and expanding commercial partnerships and initiatives.
- Experience leading complex projects or programmes while balancing strategic intent with day-to-day delivery.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build trust and influence senior people in varied settings.
- Sharp analytical and decision-making skills, with confidence working through uncertainty and finding workable solutions.
- A self-starting, outcome-focused approach, with the confidence to question existing approaches and improve how things are done.
- Previous exposure to local government, or a sound understanding of how local government operates and delivers services, would be an advantage.
What LGNZ offers
LGNZ describes its workplace as supportive, flexible, creative, positive and enjoyable. Team members value feeling connected, recognised, inspired, curious, optimistic and backed by their colleagues. The organisation emphasises that these are genuine reflections from the people who work there.
- Five weeks of annual leave.
- Three additional LGNZ leave days over the Christmas and New Year period.
- A flexible working environment.
- Modern offices in the Cuba Quarter.
- Subsidised health insurance.
