About the role
NHS Borders is recruiting a permanent General Services Porter/Driver for Borders General Hospital in Melrose. This is a Band 2 post with varying hours, including one 30-hour position, another 30-hour position, and one 22-hour position.
The successful candidate will support patient care by carrying out portering duties across wards, departments, and office areas as needed and as directed. On some occasions, the role will also involve driving responsibilities to help maintain the flow of patient discharges and respond to urgent transport needs.
Working pattern
This role requires flexibility and may include weekend work as well as early Monday shifts when needed. The salary for part-time hours will be paid on a pro-rata basis.
From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 to 36 hours. Part-time hours will be reduced proportionally, while the hourly rate will increase so that overall pay is not reduced.
What we are looking for
Applicants should be able to demonstrate strong competence in domestic-related duties, a flexible approach, and understanding of the NHS Borders Behavioural Framework. The role is aligned to the organisation’s values in action: Care and Compassion, Quality and Teamwork, Dignity and Respect, and Openness, Honesty and Responsibility.
Checks and eligibility
This post may require a different level of criminal records check than is currently required because of changes coming into effect from 1 April 2025. If the role is assessed as a regulated role, appointment will be subject to membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. Any final requirement will be confirmed by the Hiring Manager or Recruitment Team.
To work in the United Kingdom, you must already have the correct legal right to work. NHS Scotland Boards will verify UK work entitlement during pre-employment checks. In some cases, sponsorship through a Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker Visa may be possible if the employer is a licensed sponsor and the role meets the relevant salary threshold and going rate, but this is not guaranteed. You should confirm your eligibility before submitting an application.
