Site Engineer

About the Organisation

This role sits within a government office responsible for public services connected to flood protection, the upkeep of state-owned properties, and heritage-related services. The organisation operates under the oversight of the Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform.

Role Overview

The position is an initial hourly-paid public sector contract of up to 24 months, based in Trim. It supports delivery of the 2026 maintenance programme and reports to the relevant Area Engineer. The Site Engineer will oversee day-to-day operations run from the Trim Depot across the Boyne, Ryewater and Hazelhatch Arterial Drainage Schemes.

Programme of Maintenance

• Maintenance of channels, including long reach channels with a base width of 3.0m and above, as well as standard channels with a base width below 3.0m.
• Repair and refurbishment of embankments.
• Building and upkeep of structures such as bridges, grids, sluices and embankments.
• Environmental improvement works.
• All related building and civil engineering activity.

Key Duties

The role includes leading the daily activity of a direct labour team of up to 35 people, together with specialist subcontractors. The Site Engineer will also be responsible for producing method statements and risk assessments, and for confirming that work is completed in line with that documentation.

Other responsibilities include setting out work using levelling equipment, total station and GPS; checking that work follows drawings and specifications; and supervising civil engineering tasks such as excavation, shuttering, steel fixing, concrete works, and pipe or culvert lifting and installation. The role also requires ensuring compliance with health and safety procedures and legislation, managing subcontractors, supporting the procurement of goods and services, carrying out quality checks including pre-pour inspections, and keeping accurate as-built records.

Candidate Requirements

• At least 3 years of experience with a main contractor on civil engineering construction projects.
• A third-level qualification at Level 8 in Civil Engineering, with Level 7 potentially acceptable.
• A current SafePass card.
• A valid driving licence and access to your own transport.
• Preference will be given to applicants who have completed IOSH Managing Safely in Construction or an equivalent course.
• CITB Temporary Works Supervisor or co-ordinator training is preferred.

Terms and Conditions

This is an initial hourly-paid arrangement, which is common in public and semi-state settings and may lead to a direct role later. The position is generally expected to involve 40 to 45 hours per week. Pay is hourly, either through PAYE or via a limited company, and PAYE engagement includes 4 weeks of holiday plus all paid bank holidays. The hourly rate is expected to fall between €30.00 and €55.00 depending on experience. Work will be limited to the County Meath locations noted, and Civil Service mileage is available.
