Role overview
This unionized staff position sits within CUPE 116 at the University of British Columbia. The role supports the central tool crib and store by handling the receipt, storage, issuing, and inventory control of tools, equipment, furniture, supplies, and related materials for Municipal Services Facilities.
Compensation and term
The monthly pay range for this fixed-term leave replacement is CAD 6,000.00 to CAD 6,441.00. The assignment runs until August 24, 2026.

Key duties
The position provides guidance to users on selecting, operating, and maintaining tools, equipment, furniture, supplies, and other related items. It also helps identify suitable products, gathers quotations, prepares estimates, and supports purchasing in line with departmental procedures.
Day-to-day work includes receiving, storing, issuing, and tracking inventory, along with regular counts and spot checks to keep stock accurate and accounted for. The role maintains both manual and electronic records as required by current procedures.
Additional responsibilities include routine upkeep of tools and equipment, checking items for damage and working condition, arranging repairs or replacements when needed, and organizing rentals for items not available in the department.
The job also involves training borrowers on safe and proper use of controlled items, planning delivery schedules for drivers, providing courier runs to trades shops, keeping transaction records, operating a forklift and other equipment or fleet as required, and following all security and safety procedures to maintain a safe workplace.
Working conditions and reporting
This position reports to the Head Tool Crib/Store Operator and works under general supervision using written and verbal instructions and established processes. There is no supervisory responsibility for others.
Additional notes
The role requires sound judgment in deciding the sequence of tasks, determining what tools or supplies are needed, evaluating the condition of used items, and choosing between repair and replacement. Poor decisions may lead to small service disruptions and weaker customer service.

Minimum qualifications
A high school diploma plus at least five years of related experience, or an equivalent mix of education and experience, is required. Applicants must have practical knowledge of tools and equipment used across different trades and hold a valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence.
