About the Location
The Niagara Falls, Ontario plant has a long history and is the production site for Original Shredded Wheat, which has been made there for 117 years. More than 150 employees work at the facility, which also supports local community groups and food bank initiatives. The site is located near the Niagara Falls attractions and natural scenery.
Role Overview
This full-time Millwright position is based on site in Niagara Falls and is part of the W shift. The role centers on keeping production, packaging, and labeling systems operating efficiently through repairs, preventive maintenance, fabrication, and troubleshooting support.
Key Duties
- Investigate mechanical issues and complete repairs, replacements, and installations on equipment.
- Respond to written or verbal maintenance requests and complete corrective work promptly.
- Carry out preventive maintenance and routine work orders while recording inventory and labour in the computerized maintenance system.
- Machine and modify sheet metal or related parts for repairs and equipment improvements that meet food safety standards.
- Perform welding repairs and fabricate replacement components when needed.
- Use a basic understanding of PLC and machine interfaces to support troubleshooting.
- Maintain production, packaging, and labeling equipment in working order.
- Share daily repair updates with supervisors, lead hands, and operators.
- Work comfortably with computerized maintenance and inventory tracking tools.
Schedule
This shift follows a fixed weekly pattern:
- Thursday: 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm
- Friday: 6:00 pm to Saturday 6:00 am
- Saturday: 6:00 pm to Sunday 6:00 am
The role is described as full-time, but the schedule consists of 32 working hours at a higher hourly rate, designed to equal the pay of 40 hours under the collective agreement.
Compensation and Benefits
The pay rate is 41.46 per hour. Benefits include extended health coverage, vision care, disability insurance, and dental coverage.
Requirements
- A valid Millwright Certificate of Qualification is mandatory.
- 2 to 3 years of experience in a food manufacturing or food processing environment is required.
- At least 5 years of strong mechanical experience, including mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, is expected.
- A solid background in preventive maintenance is preferred, including prior experience building preventive maintenance plans.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are needed.
- The ideal candidate is self-directed, motivated, collaborative, open to new technology, detail-oriented, and able to work with urgency.
Physical Demands
- The job requires lifting up to 45 pounds.
- Candidates must be able to climb stairs and ladders and work at elevated heights.
- Frequent bending, twisting, and working above shoulder height are part of the role.
