About the role
Saipem is looking for an Automation Engineer to join its Commissioning Department on the COMP2 Project in Qatar. In this position, you will report to the Commissioning Manager and contribute to the successful commissioning of automation systems across a large-scale energy and infrastructure project.
The company works globally on complex onshore and offshore projects and focuses on supporting the energy transition toward Net Zero through innovation, collaboration, and sustainable engineering practices.
What you will do
You will support the project from design review through start-up, testing, documentation, and handover. The role covers both technical verification and coordination with multiple project stakeholders.
- Review automation-related engineering documents such as P&IDs, control logic, I/O lists, loop diagrams, and cause-and-effect matrices.
- Check vendor submissions for PLC, DCS, SCADA, ESD, and fire & gas systems.
- Confirm that all work matches project specifications, client expectations, and applicable international standards.
- Carry out pre-commissioning tasks including loop checks, continuity checks, insulation checks, and calibration activities.
- Confirm that field instruments, control panels, and wiring have been installed correctly.
- Run functional checks before energizing systems.
- Work closely with electrical and mechanical teams to make sure systems are ready for commissioning.
- Perform commissioning and start-up activities for automation systems.
- Test PLC/DCS logic, validate cause-and-effect functions, and verify alarms and interlocks.
- Conduct system integration testing to ensure all subsystems perform as designed.
- Support plant start-up and help ensure a smooth handover to operations.
- Carry out FAT, SAT, and performance testing.
- Check I/O signals, control loops, and process sequences.
- Troubleshoot issues related to automation and instrumentation systems.
- Prepare commissioning procedures, test reports, loop folders, as-built documents, and dossiers.
- Make sure complete technical documentation is ready before client handover.
- Coordinate with engineering, construction, vendors, subcontractors, and client representatives.
- Join technical meetings and provide progress updates.
- Follow HSE requirements throughout commissioning execution.
- Take part in HAZOP studies, risk reviews, and safety assessments.
- Apply permit-to-work controls and safe commissioning methods.
What the company is looking for
The ideal candidate has a strong background in commissioning and automation within EPC environments, especially in oil & gas or energy projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, Control Engineering, or Automation Engineering.
- 5 to 10+ years of experience in EPC projects.
- Practical experience in the commissioning phase is essential.
- Strong command of English; additional languages are an advantage.
- Working knowledge of PLC, DCS, SCADA, ESD, and fire & gas control systems.
- Familiarity with field instruments such as pressure, flow, level, and temperature systems.
- Understanding of communication protocols including Modbus, Profibus, and Ethernet/IP.
- Experience using testing and commissioning tools.
- Good knowledge of IEC, ISA, and API standards.
What is offered
- Permanent contract for a project-based position.
- Comprehensive corporate benefits package.
- Working schedule of 60 hours per week, based on 10 hours per day across 6 days.
- Opportunity to develop skills, grow your career, and contribute ideas within a collaborative environment.
