About the organisation

The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) is an independent statutory body that safeguards the rights and interests of adults with impaired decision-making capacity, as well as children and young people in child protection and other places that are open to visits.

Queensland Government invites people to help protect, support, advocate for, educate and empower vulnerable community members so they can live with dignity.

Role overview

Community Visitors carry out visits to children, young people and adults under the Public Guardian Act 2014. The role involves checking the quality and appropriateness of services, making observations and enquiries, and providing advocacy, reporting and complaints support on behalf of the people visited.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out allocated visits and make thorough, evidence-based enquiries into the quality and suitability of services and supports provided at visitable locations, following the Public Guardian Act 2014 and OPG policies and procedures.
  • Check whether children, young people and adults have been given adequate information about their rights.
  • Spot issues affecting the people visited by gathering their views, observing conditions, asking questions, and reviewing relevant site records.
  • Support and advocate for people to address concerns, take part in decisions, and make or escalate complaints where needed.
  • Work within the legislative and regulatory frameworks that govern service delivery to vulnerable people.
  • Use strong people skills to build trust quickly with different groups, show resilience, and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Prepare clear written reports, communicate effectively, and use information technology confidently.
  • Follow confidentiality, privacy, and information-sharing requirements when handling information.
  • Keep records accurate and up to date to meet reporting, record-keeping, and governance obligations.
  • Take part in training, team meetings, supervision, and professional development as required.

Qualifications and conditions

A formal qualification is not required for this position. However, a strong commitment to protecting the rights and interests of vulnerable people is essential.

You must hold a current Queensland C-class driver's licence and have access to a roadworthy motor vehicle registered in Queensland with compulsory third-party (CTP) insurance.

A Working with Children Check clearance (Blue Card) is mandatory. If you do not already hold one, the Office of the Public Guardian will explain the application process.

Applications remain current for 12 months.
