Job overview
The office driver is responsible for providing safe and dependable transportation for staff, consultants, visitors, and other authorized passengers within Uganda. The role also includes helping people get in and out of the vehicle when needed, along with handling routine care, cleaning, and upkeep of the assigned vehicle.
Key duties
- Drive Country Office staff, consultants, and visitors to approved destinations.
- Keep the vehicle safe, clean, secure, and well maintained.
- Carry out routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, inspections, brake checks, and tire pressure monitoring.
- Coordinate major repairs when the vehicle needs them.
- Make sure all vehicle-related paperwork and items are current and complete, including insurance, log records, and required spare parts.
- Organize travel routes and vehicle needs based on planned movements or last-minute office requests.
- Ensure passengers follow road safety rules at all times.
- Handle special errands such as collecting or delivering items as instructed.
- Provide protective support to clients when operating in higher-risk areas, if required.
- Complete any other related duties assigned by management.
Supervision and work context
Routine work is carried out under general supervision, while new tasks or special assignments are guided more closely and reviewed periodically. Day-to-day contact is mainly with office personnel and other authorized individuals using the office vehicle.
Education and experience
A High School Diploma or Uganda Advanced Education Certificate (UACE) is required. The role calls for at least 5 years of experience driving a project vehicle, preferably with a donor-funded organization. Applicants should also have a defensive driving certificate, a valid driving license, and a clean driving record. Experience operating large vehicles is an added advantage, or a comparable mix of training and experience may be considered.
Physical and technical requirements
The job involves frequent driving with authorized passengers and the ability to remain on the road for long periods. The driver should be able to sit and stand for extended stretches and occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 5 lbs. The role also requires use of a personal computer or laptop, Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint, Skype/Zoom/Teams, a mobile phone, and standard office equipment.
Travel requirements
This position requires daily domestic driving.
Compensation and hiring terms
The expected basic salary range for this role is UGX 16,000,000 to 20,000,000 per year. Final offers may vary based on relevant experience, education, internal equity, market rates, and available budget.
