Role overview
This permanent Mail Sorter position is based at Chester Mail Centre, CH1 4PA. The role sits within Royal Mail’s ongoing transformation and offers the chance to support the movement of mail that keeps communities connected across the UK.
The work is carried out in a warehouse-style mail centre that operates around the clock. You’ll be moving between different indoor tasks as part of the sorting flow, helping keep operations running efficiently and safely.
Working pattern
The role offers 20.00 to 37.00 hours per week, with shifts scheduled Monday to Sunday between 18:00 and 07:20 and 23:00 to 07:20. A part-time pattern of 02:00 to 07:20 is also mentioned.
For internal search purposes, roles between 35 and 37 hours per week are treated as full-time, while anything under 37 hours is classed as part-time in the employment contract.
Key duties
You will support the smooth running of a busy mail centre by taking on varied tasks throughout the shift. The work is active, fast-moving, and hands-on.
- Unloading mail from vans and handling incoming items
- Moving mail and parcels using trolleys
- Sorting letters and parcels by hand where required
- Operating machinery as part of the sorting process
- Switching between tasks quickly to maintain the flow of items through the centre
A single shift can involve processing more than a million items, so reliability, pace, and focus are important.
What the employer is looking for
Applicants should be comfortable working independently and bring a positive, self-driven attitude. The environment is busy, target-led, and suited to people who can stay composed while moving quickly from one task to another.
- Positive, self-motivated, and able to work without close supervision
- Comfortable in a high-paced setting
- Strong sense of community and pride in the work
- Prepared to work towards targets and handle challenges
Pay and benefits
The role offers a guaranteed hourly rate of £13.68, paid monthly and adjusted to your working hours. Overtime is paid at 1.25 times the normal rate for hours above 37 per week.
- 22.5 days of holiday, increasing with length of service and adjusted if you work under 37 hours per week
- Contributory pension scheme
- Career development opportunities
- Full uniform provided for contracts longer than three months
- Enhanced parental leave policy
- Access to discounts on high street vouchers, travel and attractions, beauty products, and gym membership
Additional information
Interviews are planned for the week commencing 3rd August, so availability around that time is important.
Royal Mail Group says it is committed to inclusion and to reflecting the communities it serves. Applications are welcomed from everyone, with particular encouragement for members of the Armed Forces community, including cadet instructors and spouses or partners. The company also states that it can make recruitment adjustments where needed.
